CHAVEZ RAVINE – For the second time in three days, the Anaheim Ducks trumped the Kings with second-effort, scrum-style goals.

Goals were something the Kings couldn’t muster together tonight.

The Kings came out testing Anaheim’s Jonas Hiller early and often, firing away for 20 first period shots. Hiller was rock solid during the Kings’ early threats, and stood on his head throughout the night.

Corey Perry opened the scoring for Anaheim, as he shoveled home a puck that was sitting idle in the crease behind Jonathan Quick, after a Ryan Getzlaf shot slivered through his five-hole.

Perry’s goal gave the Ducks a 1-0 just 2:45 into the contest.

After a flurry of shots from the Kings in an effort to tie the game, Anaheim’s Matt Beleskey extended the Ducks’ lead to 2-0 with 11:48 left to play in the first period.

Anze Kopitar was awarded a penalty shot late in the first period after being hooked while in the clear on a breakaway attempt. Kopitar couldn’t fool Jonas Hiller on his penalty shot attempt, failing to put the Kings on the board with a premium scoring opportunity.

Anaheim claimed a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes; the Kings came home empty with their 20 first-period shots.

The Kings’ offensive approach saw them continue to direct pucks at –will on Hiller, but not from high-percentage angles, and not many second chances or rebounds popped out from Jonas Hiller’s pads.

The Ducks blocked a whopping 17 shots tonight, which went hand-in-hand with the Kings’ inability to score.

The Kings showed urgency in the third period, hounding Anaheim’s zone the majority of the final 20 minutes, finding their best opportunities of the night with 10 shots.

Yet, they couldn’t finish.

The Kings’ power play woes carried over tonight, as they were unable to execute on any of their four man-advantage opportunities.

Andrew Cogliano sealed the deal for the Ducks with an empty-net goal with 1:29 remaining in regulation, giving Anaheim a 3-0 lead; the eventual final score.

Jonathan Quick made 18 saves on Anaheim’s 20 shots. Jeff Carter led the Kings with seven shots, Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty had five each.

The Kings have lost five straight games, and now have a 29-18-6 record, which is good for 64 points. They continue to sit at sixth-place in the Western Conference, but with a few teams riding close behind.

Before returning to STAPLES Center on January 30 to begin a four-game home stand prior to the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics break, the Kings will be in San Jose for a date with the Sharks on Monday, and in Phoenix for a date with the Coyotes on Tuesday.

The Kings are now 1-2-0 against Anaheim this season. They’ll have a chance for revenge when the Ducks come to STAPLES Center on March 15.
