LOS ANGELES – The Kings were unable to capitalize on a heavily injury-plagued Detroit roster tonight. The Red Wings, though, have managed to be a menace on the road this season.

A menace they were tonight in Los Angeles.

Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard, who recently returned from an injury of his own, was stellar in the crease for Detroit tonight, as he faced a barrage of shots from the Kings tonight – making 44 saves.

Scoring goals was the issue for the Kings tonight, who continue to be inconsistent in the offensive department. The Kings, though, did score the night’s first goal.

The Kings were granted a 5-on-3 man-advantage opportunity 13:08 minutes into the contest, and executed on it beautifully.

Drew Doughty rocketed home a one-time past Jimmy Howard, scoring his seventh goal of the season, giving the Kings a 1-0 lead with 5:50 remaining in the first period.

The Kings would continue to pour on shots the remainder of the night. The goals failed to come.

Detroit knotted up the contest just three minutes after Doughty gave the Kings the lead, as Riley Sheahan back-handed home a rebound past Jonathan Quick to tie the game 1-1 with 2:49 left to play in the first period.

It was Sheahan’s first-career NHL goal.

Both clubs would enter the third and final period with the score continuing to stand in a 1-1 stalemate.

The Kings continued to unload on Jimmy Howard, directing 20 shots his way in the third period alone – but few of which resulted in a prime scoring opportunity.

Tomas Tatar would five the Red Wings a 2-1 lead with 7:54 remaining in the third period, tapping home an open rebound past a sprawling Jonathan Quick.

Daniel Cleary would provide the insurance for Detroit, beating Jonathan Quick with 2:34 left to play to give the Red Wings a 3-1 lead, which would be the final score.

The Kings, with 45 shots recorded tonight, now have a total of 169 in their previous four games – averaging in at a whopping 42 pucks on net per game. Every player on the Kings’ roster recorded at least one shot tonight.

Now with a 27-14-5 record, good for 59 points, the Kings sit at sixth-place in the Western Conference.

The Kings will wrap up their home stand Monday night, and play their last game at STAPLES Center until January 30, when the Vancouver Canucks come to town for a 7:30 puck-drop.
