LOS ANGELES, CA – It boils down to finishing. Tonight, the Kings couldn’t.

Shot after shot, chance after chance, but the Kings just couldn’t find a way to get a puck past Devils’ netminder Cory Schneider. They outplayed, and at times dominated the New Jersey Devils throughout the night – but the puck just wasn’t bouncing in the Kings’ favor this evening.

After a scoreless first period, in which the Kings outshot the Devils 14-2, they did carry something with them into the second frame – momentum.

The second period didn’t present goals for either side, but the Kings continued to batter New Jersey in the shot department, outshooting New Jersey 13-3, and by a combined 27-5 through 40 minutes of play.

At this point in the contest, Dustin Brown had as many shots (5) as the entire New Jersey Devils roster.

Shots, no matter the number, don’t matter if they’re not changing the scoreboard.

The Devils were the first to strike twine tonight with 14:08 remaining in regulation, as Ryan Carter snuck a backhand shot past Ben Scrivens to put New Jersey up 1-0. The Devils scored on just their seventh shot of the game. The Kings, at the time, had 29 shots.

They responded quickly, finally finding a way to beat Cory Schneider just 1:05 after the Devils’ scored, as Justin Williams slammed home an Anze Kopitar shot with 13:03 remaining in the third period.

Kopitar’s shot was already trickling past Schneider, but Williams had to make sure it crossed the line, because the way things were going for the Kings against Schneider tonight, there were no guarantees.

That was Justin Williams’ 199th career NHL goal.

The Kings skated past regulation once again as the score remained 1-1 after 60 minutes. The Kings outshot the Devils 32-12 through three periods.

Jaromir Jagr, New Jersey’s leading scorer, finalized tonight’s contest midway through the OT frame, slipping a puck past Ben Scrivens as the Kings defensive coverage collapsed and Jagr was able to find himself alone in front of the net to bury the winner.

The Kings did earn a point tonight, and have extended their point-streak to eight games with a 6-0-2 record. The Kings killed both of New Jersey’s man-advantage opportunities, and have successfully nixed 23 of the opposition’s previous 25 power play chances.

Anze Kopitar, with his assist tonight, now has 11 points (5G, 6A) in the last 10 games. Justin Williams, with his goal tonight, now has seven points (4G, 3A) in the last seven games.

The Kings now have a 15-2-2 record good for 32 points, but they currently sit at eighth-place in the Western Conference after tonight’s OT loss. They are, however, just two points out of the top spot in the West.

They’ll be back at STAPLES Center Saturday night against the Colorado Avalanche, and hopefully with a bit more luck on the scoring side.
