LOS ANGELES, CA – They pulled out all the guns tonight, even the young ones. In tonight’s 5-1 rout of the Vancouver Canucks, the Kings were outstanding on all fronts. 10 different players recorded a point, Jonathan Quick turned in yet another stellar performance, and the youth on this roster contributed like veterans.
Linden Vey, playing in just his second NHL game tonight, lit the fire that fueled the Kings’ offensive outburst with a miraculous move to set up Jordan Nolan for the first goal of the evening. Vey, with that assist, recorded his first career NHL point.
The youth movement continued to bring energy and output, as Tyler Toffoli buried his first goal of the season while racing to the back-door on a Drew Doughty rush. Both players read each other perfectly, and Doughty fed Toffoli a quick pass with just enough room to allow Toffoli to bury it home.
Vancouver would score via a Dan Hamhuis slapshot to cut the Kings’ lead to 2-1 midway through the second period, but that’s about all the noise the Canucks would make tonight.
To say the Kings responded well to Hamhuis’ goal would be an understatement. Just 1:08 after Vancouver scored, Mike Richards slammed home his fifth goal of the season to make it 3-1. And 1:46 after that, Justin Williams buried his sixth goal of the season to make it 4-1. Both Richards and Williams found themselves with prime real estate in front of Roberto Luongo in these instances, and took advantage of quick, well-placed passes to beat Luongo from point-blank range.
Roberto Luongo was pulled from the game thereafter, but the Kings weren’t done.
Vancouver’s back-up goaltender Eddie Lack was called upon for relief, but he didn’t provide much. :46 seconds after replacing Luongo, Tyler Toffoli tallied his second goal of the contest, running the score to 5-1, which would be tonight’s final count.
TOFFOLI ROLLING: Tyler Toffoli had a goal and two assists tonight, chiming in with just his second career multi-point game. In his three games since being called up from the Manchester Monarchs, Toffoli has five points (2G, 3A). Chances are, he won’t be seeing New Hampshire again anytime soon.
CAREER HIGH’S: Jordan Nolan scored his third goal of the season tonight, which is his new single-season NHL career high mark. Dwight King had two assists tonight, which ties his career high for assists in a single NHL game. Linden Vey, with his one assist tonight, has set the bar high – now having a career high of one point in an NHL contest.
RICHIE RICH: Mike Richards is on a four-game scoring tear. After his goal and two assists tonight, Richards has eight points (3G, 5A) in his last four games.
FIRST-AID: Kyle Clifford left the game in the second period with an undisclosed injury and is going through further examination.
CAN’T STOP, WON’T STOP: Justin Williams now has 10 points (4G, 6A) in his nine games. Anze Kopitar has six points (3G, 3A) in the last four games combined. Drew Doughty has eight points (3G, 5A) in the last nine games.
HOME WAS NICE: The Kings played eight of their last nine games on home ice at STAPLES Center, and went 6-2 during that span. They’ve won five of their last six played in Downtown Los Angeles.
