DETROIT (AP) - Henrik Zetterberg said he wanted to shoot the puck more this season. So far, the strategy has worked.
His 30th and 31st goals less than a minute apart in the second period sent the Detroit Red Wings to a 7-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.
Nicklas Lidstrom added a goal and three assists, Tomas Holmstrom had a goal and two assists, and Jason Williams and Robert Lang had a goal and an assist each for Detroit. Pavel Datsyuk also scored.
Lubomir Visnovsky and Mike Cammalleri each had a goal and an assist for Los Angeles, which had its five-game winning streak snapped. Dustin Brown scored the other Kings' goal.
Zetterberg's first goal in the second period snapped a 2-2 tie. Just 52 seconds later, he made it 4-2.
"I think I'm shooting a little more than last year," said Zetterberg, who had 22 and 15 goals in his first two NHL seasons. "You have to shoot to score. You put it on goal more and it goes in."
He netted a power-play goal at 13:04 when he blasted a shot past goaltender Mathieu Garon from the bottom of the left circle. He then beat Garon with a backhand shot from the left circle less than a minute later.
"I think that's one thing that I didn't do (shoot often)," Zetterberg said. "In Europe I always looked to pass."
His second goal sent Garon to the bench in favor of Jason LaBarbera.
Visnovsky scored on a 5-on-3 power play 9:52 into the third period with a slap shot from the high slot to make it 4-3.
But Williams restored the Red Wings' two-goal advantage when he scored off a goal-mouth scramble with 6:19 remaining. His blind backhand pass attempt wound up going into the net.
"Steve (Yzerman) took a shot at the net and it went off the goalie," Williams said. "I just tried to pass it back to Steve and it went in."
Holmstrom scored into an empty net with 1:05 left, and Lidstrom added a 5-on-3 power-play goal with 6.6 seconds remaining.
"We put a couple on the platter for them and didn't get much of a chance," Los Angeles defenseman Aaron Miller said.
Detroit was coming off a 5-2 home loss to the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday night.
"We knew they were disappointed in their effort against Phoenix and were going to come out very hard," Los Angeles coach Andy Murray said. "Our sitting back and being assertive in our game only compounded the problem tonight."
Red Wings coach Mike Babcock was certainly happy about his team's improved play.
"I thought we played better and with more intensity than we have been," he said.
Cammalleri tied it at 2 at 8:33 of the second period when he picked up a loose puck behind the net and overpowered both Zetterberg and Holmstrom to score on a wraparound.
Detroit got second-period goals from Lang at 1:29 and Datsyuk on the power play at 6:48. Those were sandwiched around Brown's man-advantage goal at 2:39.
