KINGS HOST COLORADO AT FROZEN FURY XI
Colorado Avalanche vs. Los Angeles Kings
The Kings will face the Colorado Avalanche for the second time in four days and ninth time at Frozen Fury tonight from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas at Frozen Fury XI.

The Kings (3-0-0) dropped the Avs (1-0-1) in Colorado’s preseason opener on Wednesday, a 4-3 shootout win at the Pepsi Center.

Jarett Stoll scored an unassisted goal and Matt Moulson scored on the power play to erase a 2-0 deficit. After Ryan Smyth scored his second goal of the night to put Colorado back in the lead, Anze Kopitar tied up the game with 1:23 remaining, sending the game to overtime.

After a scoreless extra frame, Teddy Purcell converted on the Kings final shootout attempt for a 4-3 SO win. The Kings out-shot the Avalanche, 41-19 and Jonathan Quick and Erik Ersberg combined to stop 16-of-19 and all three shootout attempts.

The Kings are 8-2-1 all-time in Frozen Fury games, dating back to 1997, with two games being played in 1998. The Avs played in the first two contests in 1997 and ’98, again in 2000, and have participated in each of the last six Frozen Fury matchups, including last year’s 3-2 Kings shoot-out win.

The Kings also played the New York Rangers in 1991 at Caesars Palace. It was the first-ever NHL exhibition game to be held outdoors and the first hockey game played in Las Vegas since 1968. The Kings beat the Rangers 5-2, upping their all-time Las Vegas record to 9-2-1

Colorado will be playing its third contest within a four-day span tonight. Atfer dropping their preseason opener to Los Angeles in a shootout Wednesday at Pepsi Center, the team bounced back with a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars Thursday at American Airlines Center.

In net, the Kings will have Erik Ersberg and Jason LaBarbera, the two front runners to see significant time in the Kings goal. On the back end, Kings fans will get a look at Kings first round pick Drew Doughty, who many expect to make the opening night roster. In addition, returners Jack Johnson and Tom Preissing will man the blueline, as will newcomer Denis Gauthier, all three are expected to log major minutes on the Kings blueline in 2008-09. The Kings will also get a look at youngsters Thomas Hickey and Drew Bagnall, as it could be the last opportunity for both prospects to show they belong at the NHL level with a roster cut looming as early as Sunday.

Up front, the Kings will have returners Derek Armstrong, Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, Michal Handzus and newcomer Jarret Stoll. All are expected to be on the Kings roster for the start of 2008-09. Brian Boyle and Teddy Purcell, the two prospects that are expected to take over two of the lineup spots departed by Michael Cammalleri, Brian Willsie and Ladislav Nagy will also play tonight. As will Oscar Moller and Wayne Simmonds, two prospects that Kings management has been raving about throughout training camp.

The remaining spots on tonight’s roster will be filled by Kings enforcer in waiting Kevin Westgarth, David Meckler, who has spent some time on the Kings top line with Brown and Kopitar during training camp scrimmages, Matt Moulson whom logged 22 games with the Kings last year and youngster Vladimir Dravecky.

While much of the Kings staff flew to Vegas on Friday to prepare for the game, the players were broken up into two groups with practices at 9-10:30 and 10:45 – 11:30 a.m. on Friday. The Kings traveled to Vegas on Friday morning, with the non-game group practicing today from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
