Recap: Kings beat Oilers for seventh straight win

Alex Kinkopf  - LAKings.com | Sunday, 03.09.2014 / 11:45 PM

It was as impressive as the streak they continue to ride.

In a building the Kings have come to adore in recent years, their stretch of success in ‘Oilers Country’ continued on Sunday evening in their 4-2 win at Edmonton’s Rexall Place.

The Kings are now 9-0-2 in their last 11 games played in Edmonton, earning a point in every single contest they’ve played in the confines of Rexall Place dating back to November 26, 2008.

The Kings’ 4-2 win has now extended their win streak to seven games, their longest of the season.

The going came early on, as Jeff Carter gave the Kings a 1-0 lead just 1:36 into the game, as his pass attempt redirected off of an Edmonton defenseman past Ben Scrivens for his 23rd goal of the season.

The Oilers got as close as they would all night long six minutes after Carter’s opening tally, when Taylor Hall finished off a dandy of a passing spree on an Oilers zone entry to tie the game 1-1 with 12:36 to play in the first period.

Edmonton would bring their best efforts in the second period.

The Kings, however, brought the goals.

Three second period goals saw the Kings run away with tonight’s contest, as they fired away on Edmonton’s Ben Scrivens with 21 second period shots.

Alec Martinez snapped home a shot from the point to give the Kings a 2-1 lead 8:49 into the second period. It was Martinez’s seventh goal of the season, and his third in the last four games.

Martinez has accounted for four points (3G, 1A) in the Kings’ last four games. He totaled seven points (4G, 3A) in his first 40 games played this season.

Jeff Carter gave the Kings some cushion with his second goal of the night, his 24th of the season, as Anze Kopitar’s shot deflected off of Carter’s leg to give the Kings a 3-1 lead midway through the second frame.

With Carter’s power play goal, the Kings have now recorded a goal during man-advantage situations in four straight games.

Carter found the score sheet for a third time tonight, but this time with an assist. While cycling the puck deep in Edmonton’s zone, Carter found Trevor Lewis with a pass, who then deflected and chipped the puck up and over Ben Scrivens to give the Kings a 4-1 lead with 4:11 to play in the second period.

Sam Gagner would cut the Kings’ lead to 4-2 early in the third period, but that’s all the Oilers could muster.

When playing Edmonton this season, the Kings have bullied the Oilers’ defense, drowning their goaltenders in shots. The Kings rattled off 50 shots tonight, and have recorded 138 in total in their three meetings with Edmonton this season.

Ben Scrivens, who made his first start against the Kings since being traded to Edmonton on January 15, stood his ground as best he could, staving off constant Kings pressure, recording 46 saves.

The Kings are on a seven game win streak, and have outscored opponents 22-10 during this stretch. Their record now stands at 37-22-6, equaling in at 80 points, which slots them at sixth-place in the Western Conference, and 11 points ahead of the Phoenix Coyotes for the Pacific Division’s final guaranteed playoff position.

It’s now off to Calgary, where the Kings are set for a date with the Flames Monday evening at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Puck is slated to drop at 6:00PM PT.
