Simmonds, Mason, Flyers keep Kings reeling

Alex Kinkopf  - LAKings.com | Saturday, 02.01.2014 / 7:11 PM

LOS ANGELES – The drought continues.

Shutout again, and held without a goal for the third time in five games, the Kings fell to the Philadelphia Flyers 2-0 this afternoon at STAPLES Center.

The Kings, who showered Philadelphia’s Steve Mason with 35 shots today, just can’t find a way to get a puck through. Speaking of which, the Flyers blocked 19 shots this afternoon, taking away high-percentage angles and lanes from Kings shooters.

Philadelphia only recorded 13 shots, but were able to beat Jonathan Quick twice – which was more than enough to solidify a Flyers win today.

After a scoreless first period that didn’t feature much action, former King Wayne Simmonds slammed home the day’s eventual game-winning goal with 12:12 remaining in the second period.

Simmonds found himself all alone on the back-door after the Kings botched a breakout attempt, received a pass from Vincent Lecavalier, and had all the time in the world to tuck home the contest’s first goal, in his first visit to Los Angeles since being traded to Philadelphia on June 23, 2011.

It was Simmonds’ 100th-career NHL goal.

The Kings were granted a power play opportunity with eight minutes left in regulation time, but they couldn’t manage to get a puck past Steve Mason.

Matt Greene was called for Interference with 2:56 remaining, and the Flyers pounced on a trodden Kings club, as Claude Giroux added a power play goal with 1:58 left to play to give Philadelphia a 2-0 lead.

The Kings have scored a combined three goals in their previous six games, amassing 363:10 minutes of playing time. Anze Kopitar has all three goals for the Kings in that span.

Robyn Regehr, who played in his 1,000th NHL game today, is the last player other than Kopitar to score a goal for the Kings. That was 363:10 minutes of play ago, seven games, 12 days ago.

The Kings have only a single win in their last nine games, going 1-7-1 in that span. Their record now drops to 30-21-6, which is good for 66 points. They continue to sit at sixth-place in the Western Conference.

The Chicago Blackhawks will be in town Monday night; the puck will drop at 7:30 PT at STAPLES CENTER after KINGS LIVE on FOX SPORTS WEST at 7:00 PT.
