Kings Can't Find Space, Fall In Boston

Victimized by surrendering a goal seconds after scoring one of their own for the second consecutive game, the Kings dropped their final meeting with the Bruins today at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

The Kings, who were able to handle the Bruins offensively 12 days ago in a 4-2 win at STAPLES Center, had difficulty fighting for space against Boston’s defense today as the Bruins showcased their second-ranked blue-line corps.

Boston’s special teams went to work in the first period, as they potted both a SHG and a PPG in a 5:44 minute span to notch a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes.

Brad Marchand single-handedly beat four Kings to put the Bruins on top with 7:53 remaining in the first period, and Torey Krug rifled home an absolute laser past Jonathan Quick with just 2:09 left to play in the first frame.

The Kings bit back early in the second period, as Willie Mitchell pinched in from the point, received a pass from Mike Richards from behind the net, and one-timed the Kings’ first goal of the day up-top and over Bruins goaltender Chad Johnson with 15:51 remaining in the second period.

That was Mitchell’s first goal of the season, and his first in 50 games.

The Kings struggled to muster any other scoring chances in the middle frame, recording just a total of four shots in the second period.

Midway through the third period, the Kings were granted their fourth power play of the day. After failing to produce on their previous three man-advantage opportunities, Jeff Carter dialed in, hammering home a one-time slap shot off a Drew Doughty pass.

Carter’s tally tied the game 2-2 with 11:25 remaining in regulation, and was his third goal in as many games. Carter has eight points (6G, 2A) in the Kings’ previous eight contests.

Just :18 seconds after Carter’s equalizer, Brad Marchand reclaimed the lead for Boston, taking advantage of a lack of Kings defensive coverage to beat Jonathan Quick low and to the right side.

The Kings, albeit with a few late pushes, couldn’t find a rebuttal for Marchand’s game-winner, dropping their second consecutive game, splitting their season series against Boston.

Now with a 25-15-6 record, which is good for 64 points, the Kings sit at sixth-place in the Western Conference.

The Kings are now off to Ohio, where they’ll play their second game of a back-to-back set Tuesday evening in their first meeting, and only visit to Nationwide Arena, to face the Columbus Blue Jackets.
