Kings chase Rask, beat Bruins

LOS ANGELES – In finding their feet again, the Kings handled one of the East’s elite in commanding fashion.

Boston’s second-ranked defense was no match for the Kings tonight, who brought along their offensive touch, and a little defense of their own in their 4-2 win tonight over the Bruins at STAPLES Center.

The Kings were swarming in Boston’s zone throughout the night, but didn’t hand much time or space to the Bruins in their own zone, playing them tight.

Boston’s Tuuka Raask was hounded early and often, as the Kings snapped 13 shots his way in the first period alone.

Jeff Carter would bury one of those shots, scoring his 16th goal of the season with 9:28 remaining in the first period to give the Kings an early 1-0 lead.

The Kings would come at Raask even harder to start the second period, tallying two more goals on Boston’s goaltender not even two minutes into the second period.

Justin Williams, who was playing in his 800th regular season NHL game tonight, scored his 14th goal on the power play to give the Kings a 2-0 lead just 0:44 seconds into the period.

Just over a minute later, Alec Martinez rifled home a shot from the point, scoring his fourth goal of the season, giving the Kings a rather commanding 3-0 lead with 18:15 left to play in the second period.

Tuuka Raask, who made 15 saves on 18 Kings shots up to that point, was pulled for backup goaltender Chad Johnson.

The Kings would enter the third period with a 3-1 lead, after Matt Fraser put Boston on the board midway through the second.

Dustin Brown, though, would get that goal back for the Kings – as he snapped home the Kings’ fourth and final goal of the night, scoring his ninth goal of the season to give the Kings a 4-1 lead with 8:38 left to play in regulation.

Boston’s Justin Florek would chime in during garbage time, recording his first-career NHL goal, beating Jonathan Quick with 2:13 remaining to cut the score to 4-2 in favor of the Kings.

Jonathan Quick continues to look as solid as ever since returning from his groin injury. Quick made 20 saves tonight in his second win in three games since coming off of the IR.

The Kings are now 6-2-0 against the Bruins dating back to March 19, 2009.

With his goal tonight, Jeff Carter now has 16 points (9G, 7A) in the Kings’ previous 14 games. Carter recorded 10 shots tonight, and has a total of 23 in the past three games.

The Kings, now with a 27-13-5 record which is good for 59 points, sit at fifth-place in the Western Conference.

The Kings will continue their home stand Saturday night, as the Detroit Red Wings are in town for a 7:30 puck-drop at STAPLES Center.
