Streaking Blues blank slumping Kings

Tonight’s drubbing by way of the St. Louis Blues is one the Kings are going to want to put behind them, to finish off a road-trip that you’re going to want to forget.

The Kings’ 5-0 loss at Scottrade Center put a cap on their frustrating four-game trip that saw them go winless with a 0-4-0 record.

The Kings came out of the gate with an aggressive tone tonight until they fell victim to the penalty box yet again.

Matt Greene’s stick caught the face of Derek Roy just 1:58 into the contest, drawing blood, which put the Blues on an early four-minute power play, and queued the start to a very long night.

On their first shot of the game, coming on that power play, the Blues began their scoring onslaught.

St. Louis is now 24-1-3 this season when scoring first.

Penalties have been a major issue for the Kings as of late, and they started each period shorthanded tonight – as Jeff Carter took a penalty :24 seconds into the second period, and Matt Frattin took a penalty :30 seconds into the third period.

Martin Jones was pulled midway through the game with 8:19 to play in the second period after surrendering two goals on 14 shots.

Darryl Sutter, who was desperate to initiate a spark and send a message to his roster, called upon Ben Scrivens to finish the game.

Scrivens, though, couldn’t solve the Kings’ woes, as he allowed a goal on the first shot he faced, and a total of three goals on 12 St. Louis shots.

Brian Elliott stopped all 30 shots the Kings directed his way, winning his first ever game against Los Angeles.

Coming into tonight, Brian Elliott had a 0-4-1 lifetime record against the Kings.

This is the third time the Kings have been shutout this season. Colorado’s Semyon Varlamov held the Kings scoreless on November 23, and Chicago’s Antti Raanta held the Kings scoreless on December 30.

The Kings have lost five consecutive games, getting outscored 17-6 during that span.

Now with a 25-13-4 record, which is good for 54 points, the Kings continue to sit at fifth-place in the Western Conference – but with a handful of teams inching closer as the Kings continue to sit idle in the standings.

The Kings return home Saturday night to begin a five-game home stand at STAPLES Center. The Vancouver Canucks will be in town for a 7:00PM puck-drop.
