Jones, six goal-scorers lift Kings past Canadiens

Alex Kinkopf  - LAKings.com | Tuesday, 12.10.2013 / 10:33 PM

MONTREAL, QC – In their first visit to one of North America’s hockey hotbeds in over three years, the Kings left a standing impression.

A big one.

This was, in fact, a statement game for the Kings, as they trounced the Canadiens tonight, bludgeoning Montreal’s second-ranked defense with a six-goal offensive outpour, ousting the Canadiens 6-0, as Rookie goaltender Martin Jones recorded his second consecutive shutout.

Montreal showed some bite early, as they directed 17 shots toward Martin Jones in the first period, including seven shots on their first power play of the evening.

Jones stopped all 17 of Montreal’s first period shots, which is more pucks he saw against the New York Islanders in three periods of work on Saturday night.

While Jones kicked aside Montreal’s first period attempts, the Kings chimed in with two goals in the first 20 minutes, giving the Kings an early lead that they would only continue to mount and build on for the remainder of the evening.

Jordan Nolan opened the scoring for the Kings seven minutes into the contest, slamming home a rebound from a Willie Mitchell shot for his fourth goal of the season.

Anze Kopitar would chime in to put the Kings up by two goals with just :12.4 seconds left on the clock in the first period, recording his ninth goal of the season.

The floodgates officially opened in the second period, as the Kings piled on four more goals, including three in a span of 6:29 minutes – coming from Alec Martinez, Tyler Toffoli, and Jake Muzzin. Justin Williams would pot the final goal of the night for the Kings, scoring his 11th goal of the season on a pretty backhander past Peter Budaj.

Williams, with his 11th goal of the season, now leads the Kings roster in that category.

Montreal’s Carey Price was pulled with 14:32 remaining in the second period when Tyler Toffoli put the Kings up 4-0. Price allowed four goals on 16 Kings shots in 25:25 minutes of action.

Martin Jones, making his third consecutive start for the Kings, and his third career NHL start, was outstanding once again, making 31 saves while recording his second straight shutout performance.

Jones is now 3-0-0 with a .973 SV% and a 0.65 GAA with two shutouts, stopping 73 of 75 shots he’s faced.

Jones hasn’t allowed a single goal in 137:46 minutes.

11 different players recorded a point for the Kings tonight, which ties their season-high mark.

The power play finally got off the schneid tonight as well, as Jake Muzzin broke the Kings’ man-advantage scoreless streak with his power play goal in the second period. Prior to Muzzin’s tally, the Kings hadn’t scored in their previous 31 power play chances.

The Kings are now 20-7-4, which is good for 44 points, and currently sit at third-place in the Western Conference.

They’ll travel to Toronto, ON tonight for a date with the Toronto Maple Leafs tomorrow night.
