Toffoli, Scrivens lead Kings past Blues

LOS ANGELES, CA – Some trends just seem to stick. For the Kings, it’s their dominance of the St. Louis Blues.

Playoffs included, tonight’s 3-2 win over St. Louis was the Kings’ ninth-straight win over the Blues.

Not only did the Kings bag two points, but they managed to do it in 60 minutes. This is the first time the Kings have won a contest in regulation since their 5-2 drubbing of the Tampa Bay Lightning on November 19th.

Tonight, the offense was rolling from the get-go as the Kings buried two first-period goals to snag an early 2-0 lead. Jarret Stoll opened the gates, ripping a snap-shot past Jaroslav Halak for his third goal of the season 10:38 minutes into the game.

Tyler Toffoli followed suit soon after, putting the Kings up 2-0 with his fifth goal of the season, batting home a rebound off of a Drew Doughty shot that ricochet off of the cross-bar.

The Kings kept the Blues off the scoreboard in the first, and haven’t given up a first-period goal to an opposing team in their last seven games at STAPLES Center.

Toffoli wasn’t done, and added his second goal of the game and sixth goal of the season 5:48 minutes into the second period to give the Kings a rather commanding 3-0 lead.

Very few leads are safe, though.

St. Louis made a valiant effort at a comeback, as Kevin Shattenkirk scored with 5:54 remaining to make it 3-1, and Vladimir Tarasenko made it 3-2 with just :15.5 seconds left on the clock.

The Kings were able to survive the final seconds, and bag a much-needed two points.

Ben Scrivens had yet another solid showing in the crease tonight, making 25 saves on St. Louis’ 27 shots. Scrivens is now 6-1-3 in 10 starts since taking over for Jonathan Quick, and has allowed only 14 goals in those 10 games.

The penalty-kill unit was perfect for the Kings again, as they shut down all three of the Blues’ man-advantage opportunities. The Kings have now killed off 11 straight penalties, and 37 of their last 39.

Tyler Toffoli, with the game-winning goal tonight, now leads the Kings in game-deciding tallies this season with four to his credit. Toffoli notched his second career multi-goal game tonight, his other coming against the Vancouver Canucks on November 9th.

The Kings are now 8-1-4 in their last 13 games, and have outscored opponents 30-18 during that stretch. Tonight was the 13th straight game in which the Kings have allowed two or fewer goals in a game – a club record.

Including postseason contests, the Kings are now 15-3-0 against the St. Louis Blues dating back to October 18, 2011.

With tonight’s win, the Kings hold a 17-7-4 record, which is good for 38 points and sits them at sixth-place in the Western Conference.

The Kings are just two points behind the third-place Anaheim Ducks, who they play tomorrow night at the Honda Center.
