Flames edge Kings on Cammalleri's late goal

Alex Kinkopf  - LAKings.com | Wednesday, 08.06.2014 / 4:49 AM

LOS ANGELES, CA – Calgary lays the dagger in the final 30 seconds, again.

This isn’t the first time the Flames have stolen a game from the Kings in the dying seconds of play this year. T.J. Brodie beat the Kings in the final ticks on October 21st, slamming home the winner for the Flames with just :29.2 seconds left on the clock.

This time around, former King Michael Cammalleri did the late-night work for Calgary. Cammalleri found himself open and alone in front of Ben Scrivens as the game was seemingly approaching OT, and swung a back-hander past Scrivens with just :23.2 seconds showing on the clock.

The Kings, who showed a rather lackluster effort throughout the night, had a disappointing result like this coming for them.

Although the Kings outshot Calgary 22-20, there were few golden opportunities thrown into the mix. The Flames positioned themselves very well in the defensive zone tonight, blocking 19 Kings shots – protecting goaltender Karri Ramo extremely well.

The Kings had trouble protecting, and possessing the puck all game long, recording 19 giveaways to the Flames.

Calgary struck first, and in short-handed fashion with 4:20 minutes remaining in the second period, as Blair Jones put home his second goal of the season on a wide-open Kings net. The Kings were on a 5-minute power play, but Ben Scrivens tripped while playing a Calgary dump-in, and the Flames executed on a wide-open net.

The Kings would tie things up late, as Justin Williams found the top-left corner on Karri Ramo with 4:33 remaining in the game. This was Williams’ 200th career NHL goal, and Anze Kopitar earned his 500th career NHL point with an assist. Jake Muzzin also earned an assist on the goal.

Penalties were a problem for the Kings yet again, but they managed to kill off all of Calgary’s five man-advantage opportunities. The Kings have killed off 34 of their last 36 penalties.

The Kings’ point streak has come to an end at 11 games. They failed to break the franchise record, but remain forever tied with the 1973-1974 and 2010-2011 rosters, which were also able to string together 11-game streaks.

Michael Cammalleri’s game-winning goal tonight was the only goal the Flames have scored against the Kings at even strength this season. On October 21st, all three of Calgary’s goals came on the power play, and tonight, their first goal came on the penalty kill.

The Kings finished the month of November with a 7-2-4 record good for 18 points, just two points shy of matching the franchise’s best month of November ever, when the 1988-1989 club went 10-4-0, racking up 20 points.

With a 16-7-4 record, totaling in at 36 points, the Kings currently sit at sixth-place in the Western Conference. The Kings host the St. Louis Blues Monday night at STAPLES Center. St. Louis sits at third-place in the Western Conference.
