The Professor does it again

NEW YORK, NY – He came to New York’s Metro area, and he dominated. It’s been a matter of perfection for Ben Scrivens as of late.

The Kings put a cap on their current four-game road trip tonight at Madison Square Garden in winning fashion, downing the New York Rangers with a 1-0 shutout victory. Ben Scrivens stopped all of New York’s 37 shots with another miraculous performance, and the Kings’ persistent and youthful forwards provided just enough scoring to bring home two more points.

Tonight depicted discipline, character, and poise.

The Kings hitched themselves to the scoreboard early in the second period, as Tyler Toffoli found the back of the net just 1:23 into the frame. Toffoli, who has been one of the best players on this roster at simply “putting the puck on net”, saw his actions pay off once again.

Mike Richards set up the Kings’ goal by winning a battle for the puck in the corner, feeding it to Toffoli who had time and space atop the zone, and Toffoli found the net. Toffoli’s quick snap shot hit a Rangers defenseman, then graciously made it’s way past New York’s Henrik Lundqvist.

The penalty-kill unit was stalwart for the Kings tonight, as they denied all five of the Rangers’ power play opportunities. During a stretch in the second period, the Kings killed 5:11 consecutive minutes of New York power play time, including two separate 5-on-3 situations.

The Kings have stopped 18 of the opposition’s last 19 man-advantage opportunities over the span of the last six games.

Alec Martinez, who has been a regular on Darryl Sutter’s defensive corps since the Kings’ November 7 date with the Buffalo Sabres, hasn’t been on the ice for a single opposing goal.

Dustin Brown, who has been struggling offensively, locked in another strong performance tonight leading the roster in shots (6) while mixing in numerous scoring chances. Brown has one goal in the last 17 games, and hasn’t recorded a point in the previous six games. His slump is showing signs of coming to an end.

Ben Scrivens, though, was the story once again tonight. Scrivens notched his second consecutive shutout, and now has three on the season – which leads all NHL goaltenders.

You could say he’s streaky, as Scrivens hasn’t allowed a goal in the last seven periods of play, holding a current streak of 155.02 minutes without letting a single puck past him.

Scrivens shut down all three of Metro NY’s NHL clubs, stopping a combined 86 of 88 shots in his three wins against the Islanders, Devils, and Rangers.

The Kings went 3-0-1 on their road-trip, picking up seven of the eight points that were available. To add to it, they haven’t lost a game in regulation in their past six, going 5-0-1.

The Kings will host the Tampa Bay Lighting at STAPLES Center Tuesday night.
