Kings top Predators in shootout

NASHVILLE, TN – Jonathan Quick was simply outstanding. Tonight’s shoot-out win against the Nashville Predators clearly marked the Kings’ goaltender’s best performance of the young season, and arguably the best we’ve seen from any goaltender across the entire NHL.

You could say he’s the reason the Kings came away with two points tonight, the reason they had a chance.

Tonight posed as a fairly disciplined, back-and-forth defensive battle, with both goaltenders playing at their highest level. Quick stopped 34 of Nashville’s 35 shots through regulation and OT, and brought perfection to tonight’s shootout contest – stopping all three of Nashville’s shooters in calm, poised fashion.

Not only was Jonathan Quick perfect in extra shots tonight, he has been all year. Much like how the Kings (3-0) are undefeated in shootout contests this season, Quick is undefeated as well, from a personal stand-point at least – stopping all eight of the breakaway shots he’s faced this season.

GREAT, BUT NOT SPECIAL – With the 2-1(SO) win at Bridgestone Arena tonight, the Kings finished their four-game road trip through the Southeast with a more than solid 3-1-0 record, bringing home six of a possible eight points. However, the offense was skittish throughout the trip, scoring just 1.5 goals per game, and going a combined 0-14 on power-play opportunities.

CONSECUTIVE VOYNOV – Defensman Slava Voynov scored in his second straight game, and has the only two Kings goals in the last 127:32 minutes of regulation play. Reading offensive movement, and providing support to the forwards proved once again to be Voynov’s biggest asset from the point other than his shot. Mike Richards used Voynov as an outlet when under pressure, and Voynov found himself with another clear, in-stride look at the net.

KOPITAR FINISHES – Anze Kopitar finally buried a goal for the Kings this season, but don’t put it in writing or anything. Kopitar’s goal came in the final round of the shoot-out, where he beat Pekka Rinne to the top right corner with a sleek move. Kopitar’s goal locked up the second point for the Kings tonight, but it won’t be credited to his stats.

The Kings, who return home to STAPLES Center on Saturday night, come back to local confines with a 5-3-0 record. They play their next four contests, and eight of their next nine on home ice. Six of those upcoming nine games are against Pacific Division opponents.
