Kings beat Ducks 8-3 In the first of two preseason meetings between the Southern California hockey rivals, the Kings beat the Anaheim Ducks 8-3 Tuesday night at STAPLES Center.

Dustin Brown and Wayne Simmonds had first-period power-play goals for the Kings, and Ryan Smyth and Jack Johnson added first-period goals.

Todd Marchant scored a second-period goal for the Ducks before Michal Handzus scored for the Kings. Andrei Loktionov, Kyle Clifford and Johnson scored third-period goals. Dan Sexton and Marchant scored third-period goals for the Ducks.

The Kings' Jonathan Quick made his second preseason start in goal against Anaheim's Curtis McElhinney.

Brown opened the scoring with a 5-on-3 goal 7:32 into the first period. The Kings controlled the puck for more than a minute with the two-man advantage, and Brown picked up a rebound on the left side of the net and scored. Assists went to Johnson and Anze Kopitar.

The Kings, still on the power play, then took a two-goal lead at the 8:10 mark with Simmonds' goal. Michal Handzus stole the puck behind the Ducks' net, and Simmonds knocked in a rebound.

Smyth's even-strength goal, with 7:57 remaining in the first period, put the Kings up 3-0. Smyth picked up a rebound in front of the net and scored on a backhand from a tight angle. Willie Mitchell and Kopitar were credited with assists.

Johnson made it a four-goal Kings lead with 2:28 remaining in the first period. With five Ducks between Johnson and the net, Johnson ripped a slap shot that cleanly beat McElhinney. Justin Williams and Brad Richardson picked up assists.

Shots were 23-7 in favor of the Kings in the first period.

The Ducks got on the board 3:12 into the second period. Marchant got the puck behind the net, beat Davis Drewiske to the front of the net and beat Quick from close range.

The Kings got their four-goal lead back with 7:40 remaining in the second period. Brown fed a nice, short pass to Michal Handzus, who went to the net. McElhinney stopped Handzus' wrist shot but seemed to lose track of the rebound, and Handzus tapped it in. Brown and Drew Doughty got assists.

The Kings took a 6-1 lead just after a power play expired 8:41 into the third period. Ryan Smyth made a nice centering pass to Andrei Loktionov, who scored from the slot. Anze Kopitar also got an assist.

The seventh goal came just 19 seconds later. Kyle Clifford passed to the right, to Wayne Simmonds, who shot from the middle of the right faceoff circle. Clifford went to the front of the net and got the tip-in. Davis Drewiske also got an assist.

The Kings' eighth goal came on the power play, with 6:48 remaining in the game. Johnson beat McIlhinney with a long-range wrist shot to give the Kings a seven-goal lead. The goal was Johnson's second of the game. Kopitar picked up his fourth assist, and Loktionov got an assist.

The Ducks made it 8-2 with three minutes remaining in the third period when Dan Sexton beat Quick with a slap shot from near the top of the right circle.

Just 20 seconds later, the Ducks scored again, as George Parros centered to Todd Marchant, who scored his second goal of the game from close range on a tip-in with 2:20 remaining.
