For two seasons, 2008-09 and 2009-10, Los Angeles Kings right-winger and team captain Dustin Brown partnered with KaBOOM! in conjunction with the Kings Care Foundation. Brown donated $50 for each of his body checks during the two seasons to KaBOOM!, a non-profit organization that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of very child in America. During the 08-09 campaign, Brown had 285 body checks for a donation of $14,250 and during the 09-10 campaign, Brown had 287 hits for a total of $14,350.
"I am excited to continue this wonderful partnership with KaBOOM!," Brown said in October 2009. "We were fortunate to have built a playground with KaBOOM! and the Kings last season, and I saw with my own eyes the importance of this organization and its mission.
"By lending my support, both monetarily with each of my body checks this season, I want to show Kings fans just how important this cause is to my family. I hope to encourage fans to involve themselves and support KaBOOM! I am looking forward to building another playground during the offseason."
On September 29, 2010, KaBOOM!, Dustin Brown and his wife Nicole, Farmer John and more than 200 community volunteers from the City of Carson and the Centerview Glen Avalon Homeowners Association came together to build a playground for Carson children at Walnut Mini Park.
The new playground’s design is based on drawings created by Carson children who participated in a Design Day event held in July 2010. The new playground was among more than 180 playgrounds KaBOOM! expected to build in 2010 in partnership with local communities.
Dustin says, "Being outside and playing with my friends is one of my fondest memories when I was kid. There was nothing better than going out to play some street hockey, basketball or climb on the monkey bars!" Now he's able to help provide those memories for the 1,500 kids that the new playground serves.
From its inception in 1995, KaBOOM! has led more than 1,700 playground construction projects that pair community leaders with funding partners who support their mission.
"Our top priority when looking for individuals to partner with is finding those who truly strive to make a difference in the lives of children," said Darell Hammond, KaBOOM! CEO & Co-Founder. "We see that passion and drive in Dustin and we’re thrilled that he’s joining us to spread the message that play is absolutely critical to the development of children."
KaBOOM! is the national non-profit that empowers communities to build playgrounds. They passionately believe that play has purpose, and that unstructured play in particular helps make children happier, fitter, smarter, more socially adept and creative.
In addition to the all-volunteer, done in a day playground builds that have made KaBOOM! famous, KaBOOM! hosts a suite of online tools that help communities map and build playspaces, as well as advocating for more time and space for their children to play.
