Hal Laycoe was signed to coach the Kings on June 6, 1969 after winning seven Western Hockey League championships in nine years at Portland and led the Kings for just 24 games (5-18-1) before being replaced by Johnny Wilson on Dec. 13, 1969. Laycoe stayed with the club, however, as director of player personnel.
Prior to joining the Kings, the native of Sutherland, Sask., got his start coaching in 1956-57, after retiring from the NHL. Laycoe led the New Westminster Royals of the WHL for three seasons before the franchise moved to Portland becoming the Buckaroos. He coached New Westminster/Portland until 1969. In his 13-year coaching career, Laycoe compiled a record of 458 wins, 304 losses and 76 ties, leading Portland to seven titles.
Laycoe started his National Hockey League career as a defenseman with the New York Rangers. He would also play with the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins. His playing career lasted from 1945 to 1956 appearing in 531 games and scoring 25-77=102 with 292 PIMs.
Laycoe was named coach of the newly established Vancouver Canucks in 1970. He spent two years behind the bench, missing the playoffs each time, then served as the team's general manager in 1973-74. He finished his NHL coaching career with a 49-114-17 in 180 games.
He coached the Dutch national team in 1976-77 and then was a special-assignment scout for the Islanders, concentrating on the Vancouver area and Europe.
Laycoe died following surgery on April 29, 1998.
