1969 - Goalie Gerry Desjardins (Kings all-time goalies) of the Kings plays in a 0-0 tie vs. St. Louis at the Forum, the second scoreless tie in Kings' history. The first took place on March 14, 1968, when Terry Sawchuk blanked Philadelphia. Hall of Famer Jacques Plante made 31 saves for the Blues while Desjardins made 26 stops for the Kings. "When we were going back out onto the ice for the second period we happened to be walking together, he said 'It's good to see another French-Canadian boy doing so well. But, between you and me, you go down too much.' I've seen him play quite often and he's always been one of my favorites. But that's the first time I've ever talked to the guy," Desjardins said after the game. The Kings thought they had scored to win the game on a shot by Bill Flett that "appeared to hit the post, carom across the inside of the goal into the netting and pop out onto the playing surface again." Singer Robert Goulet and his wife Carol Lawrence attended the game. 1977 - The Kings scored twice in the first eight minutes of the game to beat Gerry Cheevers for the first time in 10 years (after 18 straight losses) as they beat Boston, 5-2 at the Forum. Gene Carr, Bert Wilson, Shelly Kannegtesser, Juha Widing and Bob Berry provided the firepower with goals, while Rogie Vachon made 21 saves to earn the win, the Kings first win over Cheevers since Dec. 10, 1967, a 3-1 win at Boston. The Bruins' Don Marcotte and Bobby Schmautz scored for Boston. 1994 - Dave Taylor scores his 431st and final goal (Kings all-time scoring) in his 17-year Kings career. "Scoreless hockey games can be pretty dull," observed Seal general manager Frank Selke, "but this one was a pretty good one. Both goalies had to make some real good stops. Smitty certainly had the more difficult time of it, particularly in the first period. But he played a great game. We were a little flat offensively." 1999 - Steve Duchesne got an assist to become the highest scoring defenseman in Kings history (Kings all-time scoring) as Los Angeles won, 4-3 in overtime, at Edmonton. It was also the Wings' 1,400th home victory. Robitaille would finish with 14 seasons of 10-plus power-play goals. [Back] |

1981 - Charlie Simmer (Kings all-time scoring) reaches 50 goals in his 51st game to establish a club record for the fastest 50 goals. Bernie Nicholls also scored 50 in 51 games in 1988-89. "It feels good to score 50 goals, but unfortunately it came one game too late," said Simmer after the Kings beat the Quebec Nordiques 7-5. "It's a real accomplishment to do what (Mike) Bossy did (scoring 50 goals in 50 games in 1980-81)." Steve Jensen scored two goals, including the game winner with less than four minutes to play, Marcel Dionne tallied his 41st and Jim Fox scored twice the Kings. |

1976 - Butch Goring (Kings all-time scoring) became the first Kings player to score 20 or more goals in five straight seasons. Goal No. 20 is a game winner in a 2-0 win vs. Washington. With 12:37 left in the second period, right wing Bob Nevin and defenseman Bob Murdoch fed a pass to Goring, who faked a shot at the right faceoff circle, sending Cap defenseman Yvon Labre to one knee. Goring just skated around him and ripped a 15-footer over goalie Bernie Wolfe's left shoulder for a 1-0 lead. "As soon as I got the puck, I was pretty sure the defenseman would go down, so I faked the shot," Goring said "I just wanted to go up with it, I knew where the net was and I wanted to shoot high. Wolfe's a smaller goalie and you have a better chance of scoring if you shoot the puck high." Marcel Dionne added an insurance goal and Rogie Vachon made 17 saves for the shutout. 1982 - Kings set an NHL record with their sixth consecutive tie game, a 4-4 deadlock against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers led 3-2 with just over a minute remaining but the Kings rallied in one of the strangest finishes in NHL history, as the Kings scored two goals AFTER the Flyers scored an empty-net goal. Marcel Dionne (1-2=3) and Larry Murphy (2-1=3) scored in the final 43 seconds after Ray Allison scored with 1:03 to play that gave Philly a 4-2 lead. The Flyers Kenny Linseman had three assists. |

1970 - Ross Lonsberry (Kings all-time scoring) scored the game-winning goal with one second left in the game as the Kings beat the NY Rangers, 5-4. "That goal light wasn't set up right, that's all," fumed New York Rangers defenseman Rod Selling. "The green one went on first - then the red one!" The green one signifies the end of a period in a National Hockey League game, the red one denotes the scoring of a goal. Referee Bob Sloan saw things slightly different, after 15 minutes of talking and arguing with members of the Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and other officials, he ruled the red one had flashed first with one second to play in the game and the Kings had an electrifying 5-4 victory. The Rangers Vic Hadfield gave New York a 1-0 lead, but Jimmy Peters tied it for LA. Rod Gilbert then put New York up again 2-1, only to have Peters tie it a two 6:13 into the third. Butch Goring and Walt Tkaczuk then traded goals as did Bill Flett and Bob Nevin setting up Longsberry's heroics. 2010 - Forward Anze Kopitar (Kings all-time scoring) scored his 100th NHL goal, which was the game winner, (and his 101st) to lead the Kings to a 4-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. It was Kopitar's 289th NHL game. At the time, he had scored 101-156=257 for his career. |

1993 - The Kings traded (all-time Kings trades) Paul Coffey, Jim Hiller and Sylvain Couturier to Detroit for Jimmy Carson, Gary Shuchuk and Marc Potvin. Carson would tally 12-10=22 in 34 games to close out the 1992-93 season and add another 5-4=9 in 18 games in the Kings march to the Stanley Cup Finals. However, the following season, Carson was dealt to Vancouver after just 25 games with the Kings (4-7=11) for Dixon Ward. Shuchuk played the next four seasons with the Kings, scoring 12-24=36 in 136 games from 1993-96, and added 2-2=4 in 17 games in the 1993 playoffs, including one memorable game-winning goal scoring 6:31 into the second OT at Vancouver to give the Kings a 4-3 win and a 3-2 series lead over the Canucks. Potvin would appear in 23 games with the Kings from 1993-94, earning an assist and 87 PIMs. He appeared in one postseason game with the Kings, going scoreless. 1998 - Luc Robitaille (Kings all-time scoring) picked up two assists to give him 1,000 (478 goals, 522 assists at the time) career points, becoming the sixth left winger in the NHL to reach the milestone. It came in a 5-3 L.A. win over the visiting Calgary Flames. Also in the game, defenseman Rob Blake tied a club record with four assists in one period during the second period. Theoren Fleury scored first for Calgary. The Kings scored the next four goals in the second period, with Robitaille setting up Ray Ferraro to tie the game and then Glen Murray, Garry Galley and Nathan Lafayette scoring for a 4-1 Kings lead with Blake assisting on each goal. After Calgary's Michael Nylander scored to make it 4-2, Craig Johnson scored on the power-play off an assist from Robitaille for point No. 1,000. "This has been a fun year so far, and to get it here with this organization is special," Robitaille said. Blake added, "He started his career here, he's gotten the majority of his points here, the fans love him and he loves the city. So it's nice to see him get that milestone here in LA." Erik Andersson scored for Calgary to complete the scoring. 2003 - Bryan Smolinski's 200th career goal (Kings all-time scoring) is the game winner as the Kings shutout Ottawa at STAPLES Center. Ziggy Palffy added two goals and Jamie Storr registered his 15th career shutout making 18 saves. Smolinski was traded (all-time Kings trades) later that March to Ottawa. [Back] |

1977 - The Kings game at Buffalo is postponed because of a snowstorm. The game was later played on March 3, which was a 7-2 Kings loss. The game was tacked on at the end of a four-game road trip through Detroit, Buffalo, Washington, Pittsburgh and Buffalo again from Feb. 26-March 3, with the Kings playing on three consecutive nights March 1-3. Los Angeles had won the first four games of the trip, when they were steam rolled in the first period in Buffalo. Gary McAdam, Craig Ramsay and Bill Hajt scored first period goals as the Kings were out-shot 17-2 in playing their fifth game in six days for a 3-0 Sabres lead. Rene Robert then increased the lead to 4-0 before Marcel Dionne got the Kings on the board. Gilbert Perreault then put Buffalo up, 5-1. Steven Clippingdale scored for the Kings in the third, to bring the score to 5-2, but Danny Gare and Brian Spencer scored for Buffalo to account for the scoring. In the first meeting on Feb. 27, the Kings handed the Sabres a 5-1 defeat. 1984 - Rogie Vachon (Kings all-time goalies) was named General Manager of the Los Angeles Kings, replacing George Maguire, who had held the post from May 28, 1967. Under Maguire, the Kings had posted a 204-237-91 mark, with five trips to the postseason, winning one series in 1981-82, compiling a 6-16 postseason mark. The Kings had not qualified for the playoffs the previous season and started 15-27-10 when Maguire was fired. Roger Neilson was also named as new head coach, replacing Don Perry (who had been fired three days earlier). Vachon held the post until June 25, 1992, posting a 283-306-79 mark, qualifying for the playoffs in eight of his nine seasons as GM, posting an 18-34 postseason mark. 2002 -The Kings and goalie Felix Potvin posted a 2-0 win in Minnesota. The win gave the Kings a club-record 11 wins in one month. Potvin made 20 saves and Phillipe Boucher and Nelson Emerson scored goals for the Kings, who in 14 games in January of 2002, went 11-3-0. Potvin posted three shutouts in the month (also Jan. 5 at NYI and Jan. 15 vs. Nashville) and six during the 2001-02 season. [Back] |

1976 - The Kings ended Montreal's 43-game West Coast unbeaten streak with a 7-3 win over the Canadiens. The Kings, Oakland Seals and Vancouver Canucks went that long before one of them could defeat the Canadiens and it was Montreal head coach Scotty Bowman's first-ever loss on the West Coast. "This has to be our most satisfying win of the year," said Kings Coach Bob Pulford. "We hadn't beaten Montreal this year and hadn't beaten them here since 1971. It was a great win for us." The Kings had last defeated the Canadiens at home on Feb. 6, 1971, a 6-3 win, which was also the Habs last loss on the West coast. The Kings got off to a rough start, after Dave Hutchison was sent off for a five-minute roughing penalty which gave the Canadiens an extended power play, which they capitalized on with a goal by Guy Lafleur. The Kings tied it on a power-play goal by Vic Venasky and Ab Demarko put the crownshirts up 2-1 with 7:02 left. Montreal tied the score on a goal by Pete Mahovilch and Demarko scored his second with 8:52 left in the second period off a feed by Marcel Dionne. Montreal tied it yet again on a goal by Yvon Lambert. The Kings then erupted for four unanswered goals by Bob Berry, Don Kozak, Bob Nevin and Mike Murphy and Rogie Vachon finished with 16 saves for the win. 1998 - Goaltender Stephane Fiset (Kings all-time goalies) recorded his 12th career shutout in the Kings' 3-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks, in Los Angeles. Russ Courtnall tallied the game-winning goal short handed, Glen Murray and Stacey Moger also scored to support Fiset's 21 saves. Longtime broadcaster Bob Miller is saluted during a ceremony at intermission commemorating 25 years with the Kings. King President Tim Leiweke, in calling Miller "the single most important person to the Kings," said, "Great King teams and players have come and gone, but Bob has been a mainstay in Los Angeles." 2004 - In Edmonton, the Kings pull the goalie and tie the game at the 18:50 mark of the third period on a goal by Derek Armstrong (Kings all-time scoring) and then with 5.5 seconds left to play, defenseman Jason Holland scores to give the Kings a 4-3 win. Los Angeles had led, 2-0 on goals by Brad Chartrand and Trent Klatt, but the Oilers scored three goals to take a 3-2 lead. [Back] |
