1969 - Goalie Gerry Desjardins (Kings all-time goalies) of the Kings plays in a 0-0 tie vs. St. Louis at the Forum, the second scoreless tie in Kings' history. The first took place on March 14, 1968, when Terry Sawchuk blanked Philadelphia. Hall of Famer Jacques Plante made 31 saves for the Blues while Desjardins made 26 stops for the Kings. "When we were going back out onto the ice for the second period we happened to be walking together, he said 'It's good to see another French-Canadian boy doing so well. But, between you and me, you go down too much.' I've seen him play quite often and he's always been one of my favorites. But that's the first time I've ever talked to the guy," Desjardins said after the game. The Kings thought they had scored to win the game on a shot by Bill Flett that "appeared to hit the post, carom across the inside of the goal into the netting and pop out onto the playing surface again." Singer Robert Goulet and his wife Carol Lawrence attended the game.

1977 - The Kings scored twice in the first eight minutes of the game to beat Gerry Cheevers for the first time in 10 years (after 18 straight losses) as they beat Boston, 5-2 at the Forum. Gene Carr, Bert Wilson, Shelly Kannegtesser, Juha Widing and Bob Berry provided the firepower with goals, while Rogie Vachon made 21 saves to earn the win, the Kings first win over Cheevers since Dec. 10, 1967, a 3-1 win at Boston. The Bruins' Don Marcotte and Bobby Schmautz scored for Boston.

1994 - Dave Taylor scores his 431st and final goal (Kings all-time scoring) in his 17-year Kings career. It was the game winner in a 7-4 win at Toronto. Taylor ranks third all time in Kings history in goals behind only Luc Robitaille (557) and Marcel Dionne (550). John Druce and Tomas Sandstrom each tallied two goals while Mike Donnelly and Wayne Gretzky also scored for the Kings. Taylor scored what turned out to be the game winner, scoring the Kings fifth goal as Los Angeles jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held on for a 7-4 win.

2008 - Ladislav Nagy tallied his third career hat trick (his first with the Kings), the 164th in Kings history (Kings all-time hat tricks), and Alexander Frolov set a career high with five points (2-3=5) as the Kings scored nine times to rout Chicago, 9-2 ( 700K). It was the most goals the Kings had ever scored at STAPLES Center and the first time the Kings scored as many as nine goals since Nov. 16, 1995 at the Forum. Nagy's hat trick was one of two for the Kings during the 2007-08 season and the first since  Luc Robitaille turned the trick on Jan. 19, 2006 vs. Atlanta. [Back]

1991- Wayne Gretzky scores goal No. 700 at NY vs. the Islanders in a 6-3 Kings' win (Kings all-time scoring). Gretzky tallied a hat trick in the game and became the fourth player to reach the 700- goal plateau at 11:48 of the first period when he backhanded Brian Benning's pass behind Glenn Healy for the game's first goal. Gretzky joined Gordie Howe (801), Marcel Dionne (731) and Phil Esposito (717) as 700-goal scorers. Since Gretzky joined the club, Brett Hull (741) and Mike Gartner (708) have also hit the 700 mark.

2004 - Martin Straka scored a shorthanded goal with 21 seconds remaining in regulation in a 2-2 tie against the visiting Dallas Stars. Bill Guerin and Ziggy Palffy exchanged first-period goals, and Stu Barnes put Dallas ahead in the second.      [Back]

1988 - The Los Angeles Kings' Bob Bourne met with President Ronald Reagan. Bourne and seven other athletes were named as Sports Illustrated's Sportsmen and Sportswomen of the Year in recognition of their contributions to society away from the sports arena.

1994 - Wayne Gretzky picks up four assists to lead the Kings to a 5-1 win over the Quebec Nordiques at the Great Western Forum. Gretzky assisted on goals to Rob Blake, two to Luc Robitaille and Alexei Zhitnik as the Kings scored four unanswered goals to break a 1-1 tie. Gary Shuchuk scored the fifth Kings goal while Adam Foote scored for the Nordiques.

2000 - Luc Robitaille plays in this 1,000th NHL game and scores a goal in a 2-2 tie in St. Louis. The goal is Luc's 533rd in his career (Kings all-time scoring) and ties him with Frank Mahovlich for 20th on the all-time list. Robitaille finished with 668 goals in 1,431 games.    [Back]

1969 - Gerry Desjardins (Kings all-time goalies) is involved in his second scoreless tie in five days as the Kings skate to a 0-0 tie at Oakland. It was one of four shutouts for Desjardins during the 1968-69 season. Gary Smith backstopped the shutout for the Seals making 25 saves. Desjardins had 20 stops. "Scoreless hockey games can be pretty dull," observed Seal general manager Frank Selke, "but this one was a pretty good one. Both goalies had to make some real good stops. Smitty certainly had the more difficult time of it, particularly in the first period. But he played a great game. We were a little flat offensively."

1999 - Steve Duchesne got an assist to become the highest scoring defenseman in Kings history (Kings all-time scoring) as Los Angeles won, 4-3 in overtime, at Edmonton. Duchesne's 304th point with the Kings moved him ahead of Mark Hardy. Craig Johnson, scored the OT game winner at 1:07 of OT, his first career overtime goal. Luc Robitaille, Donald Audette and Yanic Perreault all scored for the Kings while Todd Marchant, Josef Beranek and Bill Guerin scored for Edmonton. Duchesne finished his Kings career scoring 99-216=315 in 442 games.

2002 -Felix Potvin (Kings all-time goalies) shuts out the New York Islanders 3-0 for his 20th career shutout. Potvin tallied 32 shutouts in 635 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Islanders, Vancouver Canucks, Kings and Boston Bruins. He also added eight shutouts in 72 post-season games. It was the 114th shut out in Kings history. Eric Belanger scored twice and Brian Smolinski also scored to support Potvin, who made 28 saves.   [Back]

1980 - Marcel Dionne scored his 18th career hat trick and added an assist as the Kings tied the Jets, 4-4 at Winnipeg. Dionne tallied four hat tricks during the 1979-80 season. Mike Murphy scored the tying goal, while Morris Lukowich, Peter Marsh, Bill Riley and Lars-Erik Sjoberg scored for the Jets and defenseman Craig Norwich had three assists. "Winnipeg played two super periods," said Kings coach Bob Berry as the Jets out-shot the Kings 16-6 in the first and 21-8 in the second. "I have never seen them skate like that. They are one of the best skating teams in the league."

1993 - Wayne Gretzky plays his 1,000th game, returning from a herniated disc that forced him to miss the first 39 games of the 1992-93 season. "The thought of not being able to play hockey was pretty frightening," Gretzky said. "I'm getting a second chance. Not many people get a second chance." Gretzky finished with two assists in the game that the Kings lost, 6-3 to Tampa Bay. "At the start of the season, I didn't believe Wayne Gretzky would ever play again," said Kings head coach Barry Melrose. Brian Bradley scored twice for Tampa Bay, who also got goals from Mike Hartman and Bob Beers. Trailing 4-0, the Kings scored three consecutive goals in the second period, one by Rob Blake and two by Mike Donnelly. 1981 - Marcel Dionne records his 1,000th career point (Kings all-time scoring) with a goal in a 5-3 win at Hartford. Dionne hit the milestone by scoring two goals and adding an assist, becoming the fastest player to record 1,000 points in NHL history. "This milestone will be the type of thing it'll be nice to look back on at the end of my playing career," said Dionne. "I'm just happy we won. I remember last year, I won the scoring title in the final game of the season, but we lost the game to Vancouver and I was very unhappy." Mike Rogers scored twice for the Whalers. Dionne reached the 1,000 point milestone, in 740 games over 10 years, which at the time, was the quickest to the milestone. Dionne tallied 1,771 points (731 goals, 1,040 assists) in 1,348 games with the Red Wings, Kings and NY Rangers.

1997 - Eddie Olczyk scored his fifth career hat trick (and his first with Los Angeles) and scored the game winner in a 6-2 win against the Vancouver Canucks at the Great Western Forum. It was the only hat trick for the Kings during the 1996-97 season and the 141st in Kings history. Vladimir Tsyplakov added two goals, Brad Smyth and Dimitri Khristich had two assists apiece, while Kevin Stevens also scored for the Kings. Adrian Aucoin and Pavel Bure tallied goals for the Canucks.

1999 - Luc Robitaille scores two goals, including career goal No. 500, in a 4-2 win at the Forum vs. Buffalo. "It doesn't mean anything if I stop there," Robitaille said. "I had a dream just to make the NHL. I never thought I'd get here. I love to play this game. I feel I'm lucky to be in the NHL every day, and I'll never take it for granted." Robitaille's second goal of the game, with 1:46 remaining, was the the milestone goal, as he took a pass from Pavel Rosa and flipped the puck into the net to beat Buffalo goalie Dwayne Roloson, who was sprawled on his stomach. He became the 27th player and sixth left wing in NHL-history with 500 goals. Sandy Moger and Rosa also scored for the Kings.

2002 - Kings left wing Kelly Buchberger (Kings all-time scoring) plays in his 1,000 NHL game at New Jersey. Buchberger played in 1,182 NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers, Atlanta Thrashers, Kings, Phoenix Coyotes and Pittsburgh Penguins from 1987-2004. Ian Laperriere scored two goals, including the game-winner with 2:05 remaining while Adam Deadmarsh also scored for the Kings, who got 25 saves from Felix Potvin in the win.  [Back]

1975 - Butch Goring became the fourth player to score 100 career goals with the Kings (Kings all-time scoring), then added another goal and an assist in a 4-2 win over the North Stars. It was the Kings' first win after going 0-12-2 their previous five years in Minnesota. Goring ranks fifth all time in Kings history with 275 goals. Minnesota opened the scoring with a power play goal by Ernie Hicke. Goring tied it up with his first goal of the night and Mike Murphy gave the Kings the lead, and 1 1/2 minutes later, Goring put Los Angeles up, 3-1, scoring what turned out to be the game-winning goal. Dan Maloney increased the lead to 4-1 in the third and Doug Rombough cut the lead to 4-2, but Minnesota would get no closer. Gary Edwards made 37 saves for the Kings, who had just 19 shots on net.

1991 - Kings defenseman Larry Robinson (Kings all-time scoring) became the 13th player in NHL history to reach the 1,300-game milestone as the Kings beat the Hartford Whalers in overtime at the Great Western Forum. Robinson finished with 1,384 games played with the Montreal Canadiens and the Kings. Robinson went scoreless in the game as the Kings erased a 2-0 deficit and a 3-2 deficit in the third period on goals by John McIntyre, Luc Robitaille and Marty McSorley, forcing overtime, where Brian Benning scored a power-play goal with 1:23 left for the win. It was the only game-winning goal of Benning's career with the Kings.   [Back]

1982 - Marcel Dionne played in his 324th consecutive game, a club record. Unfortunately for the Kings, Dionne and Los Angeles fell to the Buffalo Sabres, 6-4, a game that cost head Coach Parker MacDonald his job, as he was fired following the game. Dionne was held scoreless in the game with Mike Murphy, Douglas Smith, Dan Bonar and Greg Terrion scoring for the Kings, who led 2-1 and saw a 3-3 tie evaporate in the third period. Then-New Haven Nighthawks head coach Don Perry was named head coach the next day. In addition, the Buffalo area was hit by a severe snow storm on that day...Bob Miller in his book Tales from the Los Angeles Kings, describes this event:

Buffalo, New York, is known for sudden snowstorms, and one hit the area on Jan. 10, 1982. The Kings hotel was only about a quarter-mile from the Auditorium. Some players decided to walk to the game, but halfway through they were hit with a horrendous storm.

The snow was so bad that even though over 15,000 tickets had been sold, only 2,079 brave souls made it to the game - the smallest crowd in Sabres’ history. The visibility was so bad that some people had to abandon their cars on a bridge behind the arena and be led off the bridge holding ropes. The wind chill was 50 below zero. During the game, the Sabres announced that fans whom were stranded were welcome to spend the night in the Auditorium and the Sabres offices. The next morning a picture in the Buffalo newspaper showed a fan sleeping overnight in the penalty box.

After the game, Kings players and team personnel were told that the four-wheel-drive vehicles would take them back to the hotel. There was only one vehicle, and it was taking four people at a time. The short roundtrip was taking 45 minutes. When I got there, I found about 30 people in the line ahead of me, so I decided to walk. I used my broadcast headphones as earmuffs and started in the general direction of the hotel. Halfway to the hotel in a blinding snowstorm, I thought I wasn’t going to make it. I was walking in the street and decided I’d better get on the sidewalk in case a snowplow came along. If that happened I figured they wouldn’t find me until the next May.

When I finally made it to the hotel, I discovered a quarter-size area of skin on my face that looked like the beginning of frostbite, but at least I made it back to the bar for “last call.”
 
1987 - Mike Murphy takes over as interim coach replacing Pat Quinn (Kings all-time coaching records), who had been expelled by the NHL after agreeing to become the G.M. of the Vancouver Canucks effective July 1, 1987. "There is a bigger and more important issue present by these facts, Mr. Quinn is directly responsible for the preparation and conduct of the Los Angeles Kings' NHL game competition," NHL President John Ziegler said in a statement. "Despite these responsibilities, he has committed himself to assume the responsibilities of a general manager for a competing team in this league, has accepted money there from and yet has continued to attempt to discharge his responsibilities for the Los Angeles Kings. Quinn is expelled from the National Hockey League and may not be employed by any member club of the league or involved in any further activities on behalf of the league or its member clubs. This expulsion shall continue during the period of a complete investigation which has been commenced by this office." Murphy would lead the Kings until Dec. 5, 1987, posting a 20-37-8 mark with the Kings.

1996 - Rookie defenseman Sean O'Donnell (Kings all-time scoring) scored the first goal of his NHL career in a 5-4 Kings loss at Toronto. Dave Andreychuk scored the game winner for Toronto. Bill Berg, Mike Gartner, Todd Warriner and Mats Sundin also scored for the Leafs, while Dimitri Khristich, Steven Finn and Eric Lacroix also scored for LA. O'Donnell's first NHL goal, at 15:45 of the third period, set up the tight finish. His shot from the middle of Toronto's zone went off a stick in front of goaltender Felix Potvin and into the net.    [Back]

1979 - The Los Angeles Kings, decimated by injuries to left wingers Bert Wilson (bruised ribs) and Murray Wilson (shoulder) as well as three defensemen all listed as "out" in Bob Murdoch, Rick Hampton and Brian Glennie, the Kings recall 24-year-old winger Charlie Simmer from their AHL affiliate in Springfield. Simmer led Springfield with 13-23=36 in 39 games at the time of his recall and would never play in the minor leagues again, joining Dave Taylor and Marcel Dionne on the Kings famous "Triple Crown Line," scoring 21-27=48 in 38 games with the Kings to close out the 1978-79 season.

1982 - The Kings replace head coach Parker MacDonald with Don Perry (Kings all-time coaching records). Former Kings defenseman Brad Selwood is named Assistant Coach. MacDonald was fired the night before after a 6-4 loss at Buffalo. Perry was in New Haven, Conn., with the Kings farm club when he was offered the position. "The glory of coaching in the NHL does not impress me one tiny little bit," Perry said. "But the challenge is there. And if you do not take it you might be sorry later." Perry coached the team until Jan. 27, 1984, posting a 52-85-31 mark, leading the Kings to the playoffs in 1982. MacDonald had posted a 13-24-5 mark in 42 games.

1986 - L.A.'s Marcel Dionne (Kings all-time scoring) became the first player in NHL history to get 20 goals in each of his first 15 seasons, when he scored twice (and added an assist) in a 4-4 tie at St. Louis. The goals gave him 650 for his career while the assist was No. 900. Dave Taylor and John Kelly also scored for Los Angeles.

1994 - Kings allowed only 10 shots on goal at San Jose in a 2-2 tie. It is a club record for the fewest shots allowed in one game. Tomas Sandstrom scored two goals for an early lead before the Sharks rallied for the tie. Arturs Irbe made 37 saves for the Sharks, while Kelly Hrudey got the win making just eight saves.

2006 - Luc Robitaille, the highest scoring left wing in NHL history (Kings all-time left wings), announced that he was retiring after 19 NHL seasons upon the conclusion of the 2005-06 campaign, at a press conference at Toyota Sports Center. "I have had an incredible journey playing the game I love and my decision to retire has been a very difficult one for me, my wife Stacia and my entire family to make," Robitaille said."The game of hockey has given me so much and it is very difficult to leave. Los Angeles is where I started my career and it is where I have always wanted to end my career."   [Back]

1961 - Kings radio analyst and former player Daryl Evans (Kings all-time scoring) is born in Toronto. Evans played four seasons with the Kings, scoring 21-29=50 in 105 games. He is best known for having scored the game-winning goal in overtime when the Kings erased a 5-0 third-period deficit to win 6-5 over the Edmonton Oilers on April 10, 1982 in a game forever known as the "Miracle on Manchester." Evans has been the Kings radio color analyst since 1999, following Brian Engblom (1991-95), Mike Allison (1995-98) and Cammi Granato (1998-99).

1991 - Bob Kudelski (Kings all-time scoring) scored his first career NHL hat trick as Los Angeles defeated the Vancouver Canucks, 6-2 at the Forum. Wayne Gretzky added a goal and an assist and Bob Halkidis had two assists, while Tomas Sandstrom and Barry Bjugstad also scored for the Kings as Los Angeles took sole possession of first place in the Smythe Division. The Kings earned their first division title in franchise history in 1990-91, finishing 46-24-10 with 102 points, two points ahead of the Calgary Flames.

2006 - Alexander Frolov scores three goals in the third period (Kings all-time hat tricks), including one on a penalty shot, as the Kings shutout the Bruins in Boston, 6-0. In goal, Mathieu Garon makes 30 saves (Kings all-time shutouts) and Michael Cammalleri, Joe Corvo and Dustin Brown also scored for the Kings.      [Back]

1974 - Rogie Vachon (Kings all-time goalies) records his third of five shutouts of the season as the Kings win, 2-0 at Pittsburgh. Phill Hoene and Bill Lesuk scored 10 seconds apart in the first period to provide the offense. Vachon made 32 saves for the win.

1992 - The Kings' Tony Granato scored his 100th NHL career goal (Kings all-time scoring) and 200th NHL point in a 2-2 tie against Washington, at the Forum. Jari Kurri put the Kings up 2-0 but Peter Bondra scored to cut the lead to 2-1 and Dale Hunter tied it in the third. Granato scored 148 goals with the Kings and 248 for his career.    [Back]

1990 - The Kings traded (all-time Kings trades) Bernie Nicholls to the New York Rangers in exchange for Tomas Sandstrom and Tony Granato. The deal took place in Pittsburgh, where Nicholls had gone for the NHL All-Star Game. Nicholls was one of four Kings represented at the 1990 NHL All-Star Game (Steve Duchesne, Wayne Gretzky, and Luc Robitaille) held at the Civic Arena, in which the Wales Conference defeated the Campbell Conference, 12-7. Robitaille tallied two goals and Nicholls added an assist in the loss. Nicholls finished his Kings career with 327 goals and 431 assists for 758 points in 602 games.

2007 - Luc Robitaille (Kings all-time scoring) became the fifth King to have his number retired as his No. 20 was raised to the rafters (photos) at STAPLES Center in a pre-game ceremony prior to the Kings losing to Phoenix, 3-2. "I didn’t start for this," Robitaille said during the ceremony. "It wasn’t about money. I just wanted to play hockey. I wanted to play in the NHL. I wasn’t the fastest player and I had flaws, but I was a student of the game and every day I was grateful to live my dream. I heard your chants. Every time I touched the puck or took a shot I heard you. I will take this to the day I die."   [Back]

1961 - Former Kings center Wayne Gretzky (Kings all-time scoring) is born in Brantford, ON, Canada. When the Kings acquired Gretzky in 1988 from Edmonton, the game of hockey -- especially in Los Angeles -- was forever changed. His career as a King came full-circle on Oct. 2, 2002, when the Kings officially retired his famous No. 99 sweater. To many, Gretzky was the sport of hockey. The arrival of "The Great One" in 1988 brought instant credibility and notoriety to the franchise. Sellout crowds became the norm at the famed Great Western Forum, and all of the glitz and glamour of Hollywood quickly followed. A ticket to a Kings game to see Gretzky was a must. Gretzky -- the greatest scorer in the history of the National Hockey League with 2,857 points -- played eight seasons in Los Angeles during which he won the NHL's scoring title (Art Ross Trophy) on three occasions (1989-90, 90-91, 93-94); was named the league's Most Valuable Player (Hart Memorial Trophy) once (1988-89); and he led the Kings on their storied run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1993. Fourth on the Kings all-time scoring list, Gretzky recorded 918 points (246-672=918) in only 539 games with the Kings. He is also the Kings all-time leading scorer in the playoffs with 94 points (29-65=94) in 60 post-season contests. Some of his more memorable highlights as a King include Oct. 15, 1989, when he became the NHL's all-time leading scorer, passing Gordie Howe's total of 1,850 points; and March 23, 1994, when he became the NHL's all-time leading goal-scorer, also surpassing Howe with goal No. 802. "The Great One" may be an understatement. His many records and accomplishments are legendary. But the fact his name is basically synonymous with the sport of hockey might not be superseded by any other athlete in any other major sport.

1971 -The Kings acquire Ralph Backstrom from Montreal for Gordie LaBossiere and Ray Fortin. Backstrom played for the Kings from 1970-73, appearing in 172 games and scoring 57-71=128 before being traded (all-time Kings trades) to Chicago for Dan Maloney on Feb. 26, 1973.

1981 - Charlie Simmer (Kings all-time scoring) reaches 50 goals in his 51st game to establish a club record for the fastest 50 goals. Bernie Nicholls also scored 50 in 51 games in 1988-89. "It feels good to score 50 goals, but unfortunately it came one game too late," said Simmer after the Kings beat the Quebec Nordiques 7-5. "It's a real accomplishment to do what (Mike) Bossy did (scoring 50 goals in 50 games in 1980-81)." Steve Jensen scored two goals, including the game winner with less than four minutes to play, Marcel Dionne tallied his 41st and Jim Fox scored twice the Kings.

1991 - Wayne Gretzky (Kings all-time scoring) celebrated his 30th birthday with his 48th career hat trick and added two assists in a 5-4 Kings' win over Vancouver. The three goals gave Gretzky 30-plus goals for the 12th consecutive season. Steve Duchesne and Tony Granato also scored for the Kings which led 3-0, 4-1 and 5-2 before holding on for the victory.

1976 - Butch Goring (Kings all-time scoring) became the first Kings player to score 20 or more goals in five straight seasons. Goal No. 20 is a game winner in a 2-0 win vs. Washington. With 12:37 left in the second period, right wing Bob Nevin and defenseman Bob Murdoch fed a pass to Goring, who faked a shot at the right faceoff circle, sending Cap defenseman Yvon Labre to one knee. Goring just skated around him and ripped a 15-footer over goalie Bernie Wolfe's left shoulder for a 1-0 lead. "As soon as I got the puck, I was pretty sure the defenseman would go down, so I faked the shot," Goring said "I just wanted to go up with it, I knew where the net was and I wanted to shoot high. Wolfe's a smaller goalie and you have a better chance of scoring if you shoot the puck high." Marcel Dionne added an insurance goal and Rogie Vachon made 17 saves for the shutout.

1982 - Kings set an NHL record with their sixth consecutive tie game, a 4-4 deadlock against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers led 3-2 with just over a minute remaining but the Kings rallied in one of the strangest finishes in NHL history, as the Kings scored two goals AFTER the Flyers scored an empty-net goal. Marcel Dionne (1-2=3) and Larry Murphy (2-1=3) scored in the final 43 seconds after Ray Allison scored with 1:03 to play that gave Philly a 4-2 lead. The Flyers Kenny Linseman had three assists.

1994 - Kelly Hrudey (Kings all-time goalies) stops Tony Amonte on a penalty shot in overtime, however Mark Messier scored with 1.5 seconds remaining to give the Rangers a 5-4 win. The Rangers peppered Hrudey with nine shots in the extra session, including the penalty shot by making a glove save of Amonte's wrist shot from in front of the net. The Kings were called for an illegal substitution with 11 seconds to play. Robert Lang scored his first NHL goal with 4:13 remaining in regulation to cap a three-goal comeback by the Kings and force the OT. Amonte, Sergei Zubov, Alexei Kovalev and Sergei Nemchinov scored to put New York up 4-1, with Doug Houda scoring the lone Kings goal. LA rallied in the second with Wayne Gretzky and Dixon Ward scoring to cut the deficit and Lang tying the score. Hrudey made 43 saves as the Kings were out-shot, 48-23.     [Back]

1970 - Ross Lonsberry (Kings all-time scoring) scored the game-winning goal with one second left in the game as the Kings beat the NY Rangers, 5-4. "That goal light wasn't set up right, that's all," fumed New York Rangers defenseman Rod Selling. "The green one went on first - then the red one!" The green one signifies the end of a period in a National Hockey League game, the red one denotes the scoring of a goal. Referee Bob Sloan saw things slightly different, after 15 minutes of talking and arguing with members of the Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and other officials, he ruled the red one had flashed first with one second to play in the game and the Kings had an electrifying 5-4 victory. The Rangers Vic Hadfield gave New York a 1-0 lead, but Jimmy Peters tied it for LA. Rod Gilbert then put New York up again 2-1, only to have Peters tie it a two 6:13 into the third. Butch Goring and Walt Tkaczuk then traded goals as did Bill Flett and Bob Nevin setting up Longsberry's heroics.

1984 - The Kings and goalie Markus Mattsson (Kings all-time goalies) stop Wayne Gretzky's 51-game point scoring streak ( video) at Edmonton, the longest streak in NHL history. The streak had started on Oct. 5, 1983 and Gretzky had tallied 61-92=153 during the run. The game also marked the coaching debut of Rogie Vachon, who was named interim head coach after Don Perry was fired prior to the game. Bernie Nicholls scored two goals, including the game winner and Mattsson stopped 27 shots in the win. Anders Hakansson and Ken Houston also scored for Los Angeles. Donald Jackson and Thomas Gorence scored for Edmonton in the third period to ruin Mattson's shutout bid.

1989 - Bernie Nicholls (Kings all-time scoring) registers a club-record 13 shots vs. Edmonton and scores his 50th goal in his 51st game to tie Charlie Simmer's club record for the fastest 50 goals. But the Kings would lose at Edmonton, 7-6. Craig Simpson scored two goals to lead the Oilers, including the game winner with 8:07 left. Jimmy Carson also scored two for Edmonton with Jari Kurri Dave Hunter, Miroslav Frycer also scoring for the Oilers, who led 5-0, before LA battled back with two goals by Nicholls, and goals by Luc Robitaille, Marty McSorley and two by Jay Miller, his second tying the score at six at 9:05 of the final period.

1992 - Dave Taylor (Kings all-time scoring) became the first player to appear in 1,000 games in a Los Angeles uniform. It came in a 3-3 tie against St. Louis, at the Forum. In the game, the Kings jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but had to hold on as Brett Hull ignited a three-goal rally scoring his 50th goal in his 50th game for the second consecutive season to spark the Blues. Taylor is the only player to ever appear in 1,000 games as a King and is the Kings' all-time leader in games played with 1,111 from 1977-94.

1995 - Goalie Jamie Storr (Kings all-time goalies) records his first NHL win, 4-2, vs. Winnipeg at the Forum. Storr finished his Kings career with 85 wins. Former Jet John Druce scored two goals, including the winner, against his former team breaking open a 2-2 tie to support Storr's 24 saves. Daryl Sydor and Eric Lacroix scored the first two goals for the Kings, erasing an early goal by Teemu Selanne. The Jets' Nelson Emerson tied the game at two, setting up Druce's vengeance against his former team. 

2010 - Forward Anze Kopitar (Kings all-time scoring) scored his 100th NHL goal, which was the game winner, (and his 101st) to lead the Kings to a 4-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
