This epitomizes the hockey player’s ‘dream’.

For the fans that witnessed or watched it live, and for the franchise itself, it’s about as magical as it gets.

It was an overtime goal to win the Stanley Cup, and on home ice.

On June 13, the Kings were embroiled in a double-overtime battle at STAPLES Center in Game 5 of their Stanley Cup Final series against the New York Rangers. It soon extended to be the longest game in Kings history. Defenseman Alec Martinez put a cap on the elongated affair moments later.

Martinez had the hands to shovel home the game-winning goal; then, hands were in the air.

With just over five minutes remaining in the second overtime period, Martinez carried the puck out of the Kings’ zone, and entered New York’s zone on a three-on-two rush with Kyle Clifford and Tyler Toffoli.

After dishing the puck to Clifford, who then relayed that pass to Toffoli, Martinez drove straight to the net. Toffoli fired a quick snap shot that ricochet off of Henrik Lundqvist’s pads, and right onto Martinez’ stick – who was anticipating that exact sequence.

It was your classic ‘shoot for a rebound’ tactic. One of hockey’s simplest odd-man rush setups gave the Kings, and Alec Martinez, a goal many will remember forever.

Martinez slammed the puck past Lundqvist as quick as it bounced off of the goaltender’s right leg pad.

Then, all was decided.

Martinez was the Kings’ fourth-round selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft at #95 overall, claimed by Dean Lombardi in his second season as the Kings’ General Manager.

Lombardi and his associates have been the architects to all of this success, really.

Lombardi plucked Martinez after his Junior year at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Martinez remained at Miami for his Senior Year in 2007-08, then shook into the Kings’ system joining the AHL’s Manchester Monarchs during the 2008-’09 season.

JAZZY TO CLASSY

The game happened to fall on a Friday the 13th, and Kyle Clifford just so happened to assist on Martinez’ miraculous game-winning goal.

Martinez’ goal secured the Kings’ second Stanley Cup Championship in three seasons.

How can you top that?
