ARE THE LA KINGS IN THE NEXT ROUND?

The Los Angeles Kings are in the Western Conference Finals!!! In the immortal words of Biff Tannen...

"There's something very familiar about all this."

Great Scott Parse!

That's right, after going 44 seasons with only making the Conference Finals once, the LA Kings have now made it in back-to-back years. It's quite an achievement and I'm sure that only teams who are proven winners have been able to reach this sort of pinnacle before, right? Right?

Oh, this is awkward.

But not so fast LA Kings fans... for the Chicago Blackhawks have made the Western Conference Finals in two of the last four years. So we here at The Royal Half thought we'd do an old-fashioned preview in which we looked at what key matchups have lead both the Kings and Blackhawks back to the Western Conference Finals!!!

FORWARDS

The Chicago Blackhawks are led by 24 year-old Patrick Kane and 25 year-old Jonathan Toews while the Los Angeles Kings are led by 28 year-olds Jeff Carter and Mike Richards. Despite their differences in age, this foursome does have a lot in common.

They all make fun of Rick Nash?
No... but close.

Sup.

So far in the 2013 NHL Playoffs, Toews and Kane have combined for 15 points in 24 games while Carter and Richards have scored 18 in 26. Jonathan Toews and Mike Richards are dedicated leaders who are also known for their strong defensive play. While Patrick Kane and Jeff Carter are flashy yet streaky goal-scorers. So what sets these pair of forwards apart? Well, we all know that Mike Richards and Jeff Carter have done some dumb stuff in the past...

...but nothing as dumb as this infomercial for something called a Dell Streak.

I mean seriously, have you ever seen a couple of Stanley Cup winning forwards look as awkward and forced as Kane and Toews in that commercial?

Oh, this is... well... this is... awkward... and forced.

DISADVANTAGE: THE SAN JOSE SHARKS

DEFENSE

In 2010, Drew Doughty, Duncan Keith and Mike Green were nominated for the Norris Trophy, awarded to the NHL's most outstanding defenseman.

He really hasn't changed one bit.

In the time since all three of those NHL defensemen were nominated for the Norris, they've been criticized for not being the same player they were in 2010. But you have to be careful when you criticize Duncan Keith... he doesn't like it.

I'm just glad Drew Doughty would never be as disrespectful as that to a fellow human being, right Drew?

Right.

But let's be honest... when Duncan Keith skates out onto the ice for Game 1 of this Western Conference Final... every member of the 2011-2012 LA Kings should reach across the red line and shake his hand.

Because without this cheap shot from Duncan Keith,
the LA Kings don't beat the Vancouver Canucks in the 1st Round last season.

GOALIES

Forget about GAA, Save Percentage or Wins... this was the most amazing stat to come out of the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs:

This is already more informative than anything Pierre McGuire is going to tell me this series.

COACH

I've been calling the 2013 NHL Playoffs the "Darryl Sutter's DragonSlayer Tour."

First, he knocked off the team that loved his twin brothers, the St. Louis Blues.

Apparently Doug Wilson hit every member of the Sutter family in the face with a slapshot.

Then, Darryl Sutter took down his former employer, the San Jose Sharks.

He hasn't changed a bit, has he?

And now, Darryl Sutter is going up against the franchise where he played 8 seasons and coached 3 years.

He hasn't changed a bit, has he?

It's not so much that Darryl Sutter fans are hoping that he beats the Blackhawks for his own personal satisfaction... but rather Chicago Blackhawks fans are cheering for Darryl Sutter to beat the Blackhawks so that they can finally fire Head Coach Joel Quenneville.

ADVANTAGE: IF SUTTER WINS, KINGS & BLACKHAWKS FANS
