Today is the 19th anniversary of Wayne Gretzky scoring his 802nd career NHL goal, breaking his idol Gordie Howe's record for most goals in a career. Like literally... to the day 19 years ago... March 23rd, 1994. And I remember it like it was yesterday.

Hmm... maybe my memory is a little fuzzier than it used to be.

I'm seem to remember it being a lot more colorful.

That's better... but I wish there was something that more visually represented that it was 1994.

Warmer.

Colder.

Nailed it.

For those of you that don't remember... let's take a look back at that amazing day that both The Royal Half and The Mayor NHL was at.

Southwest Gretzky is by far my favorite Gretzky.

The LA Kings lost the game that night 6-3. And jeez... hmmm... who was that team they were playing?

Really smart idea to shoot it on a black background, guys.

Since the Vancouver Canucks and the Los Angeles Kings have a long history of meaningless games against each other... Spike Coffman, The Royal Half's In-House 1990s LA Kings Historian, decided that for this special day we would commemorate the 19th anniversary of the 802 goal... by taking a deeper look at a Canucks-Kings game from November 12th,1991. Because that's just how we like to do things around here at The Royal Half. It's something we like to call...

November 12th, 1991. The 18th game of the 1991-92 season for the LA Kings.

The game hasn't changed one bit, has it?

There actually were a lot of milestones in this game. For instance, there was Pavel Bure's 1st NHL Goal.

And later... Pavel Bure's 2nd NHL Goal.

And then Pavel Bure introducing the European Style of Hockey to an American audience.

Even rarer than 2 goals by a Russian rookie in 1994 was 2 goals by Sergio Momesso in 1994.

The final score of this game was 8-2 Vancouver. So there were plenty of goal highlights.

And even the LA Kings scored 2 for good measure.

And like any good game from the mid 1990's that involved a 8-2 score... Marty McSorley and Gino Odjick fought. Twice.

One of the most amazing pieces of tape to come out of this game from November 1991 is this in-depth segment about the expanding market of ice hockey video games.

This might be my greatest screengrab ever.
Rob Blake doing his best Anze Kopitar impression here.

And finally, tonight... we here at The Royal Half are very excited to present a TRH KINGS VIDEO MACHINE WORLD PREMIERE!!! Now this is probably Spike Coffman's single greatest discovery in all of his dedicated historical research relating to the 1990s LA Kings. This should bring back fond memories from any LA Kings fan that was alive in the early 1990s!!!
