LA Kings Partner Spotlight
Still hungry after winning their first Stanley Cup, the Kings have a devised a fitting plan as they begin their title defense: They are going to McDonald’s.
With the puck dropping on the most ambitious season in franchise history, the standards are exceedingly high in Los Angeles. The Kings are attempting to become the first team since the 1998 Detroit Red Wings to repeat as Stanley Cup champions, while also continuing to build a marquee franchise off the ice.
The Kings will have a little added support as they undertake those lofty goals this season as McDonald’s steps up its association with the organization as the team’s first-ever deal of its type. The agreement runs for two years.
The hamburger behemoth has enjoyed a 14-year relationship with the Kings organization and STAPLES Center as a founding partner, and this season’s deal guarantees 2013 will be a banner year for the Kings and their fans. McDonald’s will be the presenting sponsor of opening night and, as the Kings raise their first Stanley Cup banner at STAPLES Center, the burger chain will present a miniature replica banner to every fan in attendance.
Opening night will just be the start of things, for both the Kings and their inaugural presenting partner. McDonald’s will be integrated into the entire 2013 campaign, with a logo on the team’s practice jerseys and on press conference backdrops. McDonald’s will also present the “Stanley Cup Channel,” which figures to be one of the most popular features on KingsVision. Additionally, McDonald’s will be integral to a number of the organization’s community relations and grassroots events.
“Winning the Cup has certainly given our organization the opportunity to deliver greater results for our partners on new and unique platforms,” said AEG Global Partnerships Senior Vice President Bill Pedigo. “This expanded partnership with McDonald’s is a prime example of that and will certainly play a significant role in the future success of the team on and off the ice.”
McDonald’s will also be integrated into the club’s annual Legends Series, and will present the “Player of the Month” fan-voting platform. When launched, fans will have the ability to vote for their favorite player via LAKings.com, the Kings Facebook page and their mobile phones.
“McDonald’s Owner/Operators of Southern California have had a long and treasured relationship with the Los Angeles Kings, culminating with their most memorable march through last season all the way to the Stanley Cup,” said Mike Mangione, President, McDonald’s Operators’ Association of Southern California.
In addition to signing on as this season’s presenting sponsor, McDonald’s will team up with the Kings to donate $1 million to four local charities - Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California, Boys and Girls Club of America, and City Year Los Angeles - as a special “thank you” to the city of Los Angeles for its support this past year.
“We have a very special relationship with McDonald’s as our presenting sponsor,” Kings Governor Tim Leiweke said. “I want to thank McDonald’s for matching us, dollar-for-dollar, as we give this money back to the community.”
In addition to being famous for serving billions of burgers, McDonald’s is also known for being a longtime personal favorite of hockey icon Wayne Gretzky.
Fittingly, the Kings believe their association with the McDonald’s will be a great one.
