Reign Earn 4-3 OT Win Over Condors

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.– The Ontario Reign (11-4-0-0), defending Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL’s 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings, clawed out a 4-3 shootout win over the Bakersfield Condors (5-8-1-2) before a crowd of 4,099 at Rabobank Arena Saturday night. It was Ontario’s seventh consecutive win, tying the franchise record set last season.

A pair of Reign mistakes set the Condors up early in the first period. After Mario Lamoureux iced the puck to force a faceoff in the Reign end, Ontario turned the puck over to David Toews who passed it to Peter Boyd for the score at 2:15. Jason Beeman tied it 1-1 at 4:08 as he appeared to be headed behind the Condors’ net, but surprised goaltender Brian Stewart with a quick shot that squeezed just inside the left post. The goal was Beeman’s third in the past four games. Derek Couture gave Ontario a 2-1 lead at 9:34 as he fought off a pair of Bakersfield defenders for his third power-play tally of the season. The Reign captain fired a snap shot from the slot then poked in his own rebound. Assists went to Cameron Burt and Dan DaSilva.

Bakersfield tied it at just 1:38 of the second frame. Levi Nelson retrieved the puck along the red line, turned and fired a shot off of Reign netminder Chris Carrozzi and into the net. Kyle Kraemer regained the lead for Ontario at 7:09 as Paul Mara’s point shot banked in off of Kraemer’s skate. Brady Calla earned an assist in his first game back after missing six contests.

The Reign lead lasted until 7:34 of the third, when Jacob Legace snapped Nelson’s pass into the left side of the net. Ontario had three shots in the closing seconds, but couldn’t convert.

Overtime began 3-on-3 as CJ Stretch and Boyd were assessed matching roughing minors at the end of regulation. The Reign were unable to get the puck in the net despite outshooting the Condors 5-2, sending the game to a shootout.

Stretch scored in the first round, but was matched by Boyd. Lamoureux, coming off of a hat trick in his last game, came up big again as the Reign rookie scored the game winner in the fourth round.

Carrozzi’s fifth consecutive win came with 23 saves on 23 shots in regulation and 4 stops on 5 shootout attempts. Stewart took the loss with 32 saves on 35 shots and 3 stops in the shootout.

Three Stars:
1. BAK – Jacob Legace
2. ONT – Mario Lamoureux
3. BAK – Levi Nelson
