Bernier enjoys eventful day with Cup in Quebec
After a picturesque trip through Slovenia with Kings star Anze Kopitar and two days of travels through Massachusetts with head athletic trainer Chris Kingsley, pro scout Steve Greeley and co-director of amateur scouting Mark Yannetti, the Stanley Cup found itself in the province of Quebec on Thursday as it spent the day with Los Angeles goaltender Jonathan Bernier.
The morning after the Kings received an award for Best Upset at the annual ESPYS, Bernier received the Cup in the city of Laval, a large suburban area just north of the island of Montreal that is the hometown of NHL greats Martin Brodeur, Mike Bossy and Maurice Richard.
For Bernier, the day with the Cup started with a visit to City Hall, where the goalie was welcomed with open arms by Mayor Gilles Vaillancourt before signing his name in the building's historic guest book.
By 1:30 p.m. that day, Bernier and the Cup had made their way to Yvon Chartrand Arena, the local hockey rink where residents had already been lining up for roughly three hours to have their pictures taken with both the goalie and the trophy.
The homecoming was a special one for Bernier, who began playing as a youngster in the area before beginning his junior career with the Lewiston MAINEiacs of the QMJHL.
Before fans started posing for photos with the Cup, Bernier was honored with the unveiling of a special banner and painting commemorating his Cup win.
