Devils Take Down Monarchs
MANCHESTER, NH – The Manchester Monarchs set a franchise record for consecutive home losses with their fifth straight defeat at the Verizon Wireless Arena, a 3-1decision to the Albany Devils on Saturday night.

Manchester (28-27-0-3) is in second place the Atlantic Division with 59 points.  Albany (26-20-5-3) is in third place in the Northeast Division with 60 points.

“(Jeff) Frazee stood on his head,” said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris.  “Our inability to score goals is ever apparent out there.  We are getting some great chances and we hustled and competed.  I think my biggest disappointment is our lack of execution at the end of the game.  We had no regard for the puck.  We were trying to carry the puck into traffic.  We turned the puck over three times when we have an extra skater out there and all we need to do is get the puck deep and get in there and win a puck battle and start shooting to get more traffic in front to give ourselves a chance to win.”

The Devils stretched their lead to 2-0 off of the stick of center Steve Zalewski at 13:54 of the middle stanza.  Devils goaltender Jeff Frazee came out of the net and played the puck up to right wing Joe Whitney along the right wing boards as he entered the Monarchs zone.  Whitney carried the puck to the top of the right wing face-off circle before finding left wing Vladimir Zharkov in the left face-off circle.  Zalewski was stationed between the hash-marks and tipped a pass from Zharkov between the legs of goaltender Martin Jones for his 12th goal of the season.

The Devils struck first with a power play goal by defenseman Eric Gelinas at 3:18 of the second period.  Right wing Mattias Tedenby played the puck back for Gelinas at the right point.  Gelinas handled the puck as he skated to the center point before releasing a slap shot that fought its way through traffic and past Jones.  Whitney also tallied an assist on Gelinas’ 12th goal of the season play.

The Monarchs scored their only goal of the game when center Justin Azevedo was able to wrist a shot past Frazee with one minute left in the middle stanza.  Defenseman Andrew Campbell broke out of the Monarchs zone and found Azevedo racing through the neutral zone.  Azevedo took the long pass and split the defense breaking in on Frazee before wristing a shot past Frazee’s glove.  Azevedo’s 13th goal of the season was also assisted by left wing Richard Clune.

The Devils finished off the Monarchs with an empty net goal by Zharkov when he wristed in a shot at 19:01 of the final period.  Zharkov took a feed from defenseman Dan Kelly before shooting the puck from the left point for his 12th goal of the season.

Jones (13-15-2) took his 15th loss of the season stopping 25-of-27 shots.  Frazee (9-12-2) earned his ninth win of the season making 38 saves on 39 shots.

Manchester went 0-for-8 on the power play.  Albany was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
