Monarchs Drop Fourth Straight
Monarchs score first but fall 2-1
Manchester (28-25-0-2) is in second place in the Atlantic Division with 58 points. Hershey (29-15-4-4) is in third place in the East Division with 66 points.
“Effort was there in the third period,” said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. “We had more than two dozen turnovers in the first two periods. There was a lot of reaching and batting at pucks. You have to skate if you are going to score goals. You have to skate if you are going to want to control the puck. We had a hard time doing that until the third period generating a whole lot of offensive threat.”
The Bears took their first lead at 9:05 of the second period on the power play with center Ryan Potulny scoring his second goal of the game. Forward Jacob Micflikier made the pass to left wing Chris Bourque at the top of the right wing face-off circle. Bourque circled around to the right point before finding Potulny at the bottom of the right face-off circle. Potulny one-timed the puck for the eventual game-winning goal and his 19th goal of the season.
The Monarchs started the scoring with a quick goal at 1:08 of the first period off the stick of center Justin Azevedo. Right wing Stefan Legein passed the puck to defenseman Patrick Mullen at the left wing half wall in the Bears zone. Mullen chipped a bouncing puck toward the net where Azevedo intercepted and swiped the puck on the short side of Bears netminder Braden Holtby for his 11th tally of the season.
Hershey knotted the game up 1-1 on the power play with Potulny’s 18th goal of the season at 3:16 of the second period. Right wing Graham Mink passed to defenseman Patrick McNeill along the left wing half wall. McNeill then made the pass to the bottom edge of the right circle to Potulny who beat Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones with a one-timer.
Jones (13-14-1) took his 14th loss of the season stopping 39-of-41 shots. Holtby (19-11-1) earned his 19th victory of the season making 33 saves on 34 shots.
Manchester went 0-for-3 on the power play. Hershey was 2-for-3 with the man advantage.
