ONTARIO, Calif.- The Ontario Reign (24-14-2-2), proud affiliate of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, held the Alaska Aces (31-9-2-4) to its fourth consecutive road loss before 4,590 Tuesday night at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
The Reign found themselves at an early disadvantage as Dan Kissel put the Aces up 1-0 10:57 into play. The Reign gained parity on Adrian Van de Mosselaer’s first professional goal with just over a minute left in the opening period. The rookie blueliner’s wrist shot from the high slot found its way through traffic and into the net. Brady Calla and Chris Cloud assisted on the goal.
The Aces had several quality chances off of Reign turnovers, but it was Ontario who converted an Aces miscue at 15:11 of the second period to grab its first lead of the game. A forechecking Kyle Kraemer swiped the puck from an Aces defender behind his net and fed the trailing Calla at the base of the left circle where he cracked an authoritative one-timer over Adam Courchaine’s glove to make it 2-1.
The third period featured back-and-forth action, as Ontario fell back into a tie on a goal by Zach Harrison at 2:59 then re-established the lead at 12:01 on Derek Couture’s 20th marker of the season only to see Alaska’s Jordan Kremyr net the equalizer at 15:24, sending the game into overtime knotted at 3-3.
The Reign played 3:18 of the overtime frame short-handed, but the best penalty-killing unit in the ECHL denied all of its opponent’s power-play opportunities for the sixth consecutive contest to force a shootout.
Steven Tarasuk and Kraemer each scored in the shootout and Carrozzi denied all four bids by Alaska to lift the Reign to a 4-3 win.
Carrozzi (9-5-3) made 31 saves in the win to run his unbeaten streak to 10 games (8-0-2), while Courchaine (14-5-4) took the loss with 21 saves.
