Monarchs Conquer Khudobin
Monarchs extend home win-streak to six games
Manchester (13-10-0-1) ranks second in the Atlantic Division with 27 points. The Bruins (8-14-1-2) are in fifth place in the East Division with 19 points.
“Our start was exactly the way we wanted to start,” said Monarch Head Coach Mark Morris. “It is two points. It is probably not the way we envisioned it, but it happened that way. We were hoping to win in regulation but it didn’t happen. Give our guys credit, they found a way. You also have to give the guys credit for coming in with the energy level they did after a long bus trip from Binghamton.”
Right wing Jordan Nolan tallied the shootout winner for the Monarchs. Manchester also received goals from right wing Linden Vey and center Marc-Andre Cliche. Monarchs netminder Martin Jones stopped center Zach Hamill, center Josh Hennessy and right wing Jordan Caron in the shootout. Center Jamie Arniel scored the lone goal in the shootout for the Bruins. Providence goaltender Anton Khudobin denied right wing Brandon Kozun.
The Monarchs opened the scoring on a 5-on-3 power play goal by defenseman David Kolomatis. Defenseman Andrew Campbell prevented a Bruins clearing attempt by corralling the puck and passing it down to center Justin Azevedo in the left corner. Azevedo found Kolomatis on the right side of the net where he wristed in his fourth goal of the season at 16:38 of the first period.
The Bruins tied the game at 1-1 after right wing Craig Cunningham found a rebound in front of the net for a power play goal at 8:57 of the second period. Defenseman Matt Bartkowski started the break out from the Bruins zone and found Caron at the Monarchs blueline. Caron fired a wrist shot that produced the rebound that Cunningham swatted past Jones for his third goal of the season.
The Bruins took the lead 2:25 later off the stick of Caron. Defenseman David Warsofsky dumped the puck in from the left point to Hennessey behind the Monarchs net. Hennessey found Caron in the slot for his first goal of the year at the 11:22 mark of the second period.
The Monarchs tied the game at 2-2 when Azevedo scored on a delayed penalty call. Left wing Dwight King launched a slap pass from the left wing boards to the right wing face-off dot where Azevedo released a slap shot for his fifth goal of the season. Campbell earned his second assist of the night on Azevedo’s goal at the 16:40 mark of the middle frame.
The Bruins broke the 2-2 tie in the third period with Hennessey’s seventh goal of the season. Hennessey and Cunningham executed a give-and-go play that began at the red line and concluded in the left slot. Hennessey wristed a shot five-hole at the 5:00 minute mark of the third period.
The Monarchs responded 2:40 later with a power play goal by Kozun at the 7:40 mark of the final stanza. Center Robbie Czarnik found defenseman Nick Deslauriers at the top of the right face-off circle. Deslauriers wristed a shot that rang off the post and produced a rebound on the right door step of Khudobin. Kozun roofed the rebound for his sixth goal of the season.
The Monarchs took a 4-3 lead 8:51 of the third period with left wing David Meckler’s sixth tally of the season. Deslauriers fired a shot from the left point causing a rebound in front of the net where Meckler wristed a shot as he fell to the ice. Cliche also earned an assist on the go-ahead goal.
The Bruins evened the score at 4-4 late in the third period on a 5-on-3 power play goal. Warsofsky passed the puck from the left point to right wing Carter Camper in the near corner. Camper passed across the goal crease to Hennessy at the left doorstep who roofed the puck in for his second goal of the game at 18:23 of the third period.
Jones (8-7-0) earned his eighth victory of the season stopping 37-of-41 shots in regulation and stopped 3-of-4 shootout snipers. Khudobin (7-11-2) took his second shootout loss of the season making 34 saves on 38 shots in regulation and stopping 1-of-4 shootout attempts.
Manchester went 2-for-7 on the power play. Providence was 2-for-6 with the man advantage.
