Post-Game Notes: Blackhawks 2, Kings 1

KINGS NOTES:
  • Tonight was the Kings’ first regulation loss when allowing two-or-fewer goals in a game (now 8-1-1)
  • Teams combined for only eight penalty minutes tonight (Kings: 4 and Chicago: 4)
  • The four penalty minutes for the Kings tied a season low
  • Trent Hunter had four shots and five hits tonight
  • Rob Scuderi had four blocked shots tonight
  • Colin Fraser has five hits tonight
  • Mike Richards had his career high goal streak snapped at five games
  • Through 23 games last season the Kings also had 26 points (13-10-0)
  • They had 28 points through 23 games in 2009-10 (13-8-2)
KINGS HEAD COACH TERRY MURRAY:
(Re game recap): “Holding them at two goals is good. They are the leading scoring team in the conference. We had lots of good looks here tonight. We ended up tying the game at 1-1. Then they won a faceoff to make it 2-1. After that, we had four or five tremendous looks and we are just having a tough time finding the back of the net right now. There’s not a better look that you could hope for in a couple of those situations, but it’s just not going in.”

(Re shooting and extra passes): “Extra passes are not a good thing for us right now. We want to get pucks to the net. We have to score some greasy, ugly goals, as they say, and that might be the crack in the door and we can kick it open and start to feel more comfortable scoring goals.”

KINGS FORWARD ANZE KOPITAR:
(Re game recap):  “We had our share of chances but we couldn’t bear down.  A couple of times the puck was just laying around there and we couldn’t quite get it in there.  It’s tough but we can’t feel sorry for ourselves.”

(Re shot mentality): “There’s no secret to it. You just have to get more shots on net.  When you have a 4-on-2 rush you have to go and get a shot on net.  You have to keep it simple, take the shot, and not try to be too cute.”

KINGS DEFENSEMAN ROB SCUDERI:
(Re Offense):  “They’re [offense] is doing 95 percent of their job right now. The other five percent is just burying that chance when you get there. They’re creating their opportunities, they’re moving well together, and they’re getting open and getting good shots.  It’s just burying that opportunity once in a while that seems to be the difference for us right now.”

(Re game recap): “Any time in this league if you can keep a team to two goals or less, you’ve got to like your chances for a point and hopefully a win.  It wasn’t the case tonight; I thought their goalie [Corey Crawford] played well.  We missed a few big chances.”

CHICAGO HEAD COACH JOEL QUENNEVILLE:
(Re game recap): “I think that the game that got us back on track was against San Jose, losing 1-0. We talked about being consistent with that kind of an effort and playing that type of style and game and we got rewarded the next two nights. It was a very competitive game tonight. Crawford made some big saves on a few bouncing pucks and we found a way to get through.”

(Re scoring first): “Scoring first certainly helped. I thought we had a good start to the game and they had some stretches there where they scored and we got a response to it later. I thought we responded to a poor start yesterday and getting the win is important.”

CHICAGO FORWARD JONATHAN TOEWS:
(Re game recap): “It was probably in some ways our best game of the trip. We knew it was going to be a tight one. When you come on the road and you play a team like that, they use the home crowd and play with energy at home. We were smart, we didn’t have many chances against and they had some good penalty kills and chances on the power play. I think all around we played a good game. It’s fun to win those tight ones, especially at the end of this road trip.”

(Re team work ethic): “We know how good we can be if we go out there and work, but without our work ethic, without sticking to our game plan, there’s not much there. We know teams will raise their game against us and we got to be ready for that. There’s not going to be any easy ones for us out there, we just got to work for it.”

CHICAGO GOALTENDER COREY CRAWFORD:
(Re game recap): “I felt pretty good. I haven’t been getting the results I have wanted. I feel like I need to do a little bit more, but that was another good game for us. We played well; guys are coming back, breaking up plays, overall a good game. We just got to keep rolling here.”

(Re goals against): “You definitely want to be defense first. With the offense we have it’s only going to help us. It was important just to get to .500 (on the road trip). We’re happy we did that and we’re going home now.”
