Post-Game Notes: Penguins 3, Kings 2 (SO)

KINGS HEAD COACH TERRY MURRAY:
(Re game recap):  “That was a good game.  The number of power plays [Pittsburgh] had in the first period; we did a great job on the penalty kill.  I know we gave up one but the attitude was tremendous to get in those lanes, blocked shots, and just to really dig in.  And then we carried through to the second period. The pace of the game picked up, the compete level got real heavy, our dot to the board game was as good as it’s been all year long in my opinion and I like that, it’s the way we have to play.  Unfortunately, on the tying goal they got at the end, a strong play by them, over all I was really happy with our compete.”

(Re Kings goals): “They’re good goals. They’re the kind of plays in a good hockey game.  The puck is transitioned, there’s lots of battle, a lot of compete.  Again it was a good, solid hockey game here tonight.  Those are the kinds of goals that you’re looking for.  The guys step up and make the plays, they score, same for [Pittsburgh]. They got a couple big plays from their top guys.  But I think everybody went away pretty happy tonight.”

KINGS FORWARD ANZE KOPITAR:
(Re game recap): “The outcome wasn’t the way we wanted it to be but I think our game overall was much better than it was last game. If we play like that, I like our chances in each and every game. We had a couple chances in the third and in OT but we couldn’t score there. It didn’t go our way tonight.”

(Re giving up late goal): “Anytime you give up a goal it is unfortunate, especially late in the game. There’s nothing you can do but fight on and go after it again. I think we played really good. The key to our success is the play through the neutral zone, enter the zone with good speed and spacing.”

KINGS DEFENSEMAN MATT GREENE:
(Re game recap): “Tonight I thought we had some big time chances. This team is good enough that it’s going to come down to guys scoring goals. It’s going to happen sooner or later by sticking with the system and doing what we do, cycling the puck, and that’s how it’s going to happen.”

(Re long streaks of wins/losses): “I don’t think we are. The last couple games we lost in regulation and then tonight we lost in a shootout. We’re playing well and I thought tonight was a good game for us. Sometimes that’s the way it goes in a shootout. Not much you can do. We want to win every game, but tonight it didn’t happen. Now we have to focus on San Jose.”

PITTSBURGH HEAD COACH DAN BYLSMA:
(Re game recap): “Tonight was an entertaining game. We kind of allowed them an opportunity to get in the game at that point with a 1-1 tie.  It was certainly entertaining at that point. And then we had a huge effort at the end there at the last five minutes.”

(Re Kunitz’s shootout goal): “He’s done that move quite a bit. It’s his go-to and it seems to get goalies to open up and he scored and had success there. I don’t know if Quick remembered that one.”

(Re last two games): “[Its been] tough with injuries and a lot of different things. You know, tough games on the West Coast against good teams. To be able to scratch out three points I am real pleased with that.”

PITTSBURGH FORWARD CHRIS KUNITZ:
(Re game tying goal): “Really good fore-check by Duper [Pascal Dupuis], he kind of jumped the guy and the puck, I think the people lost it, it was kind of up in the glass. He took it behind to make the play out to [Jordan Staal] coming out to the net and hit his skate, then he made a pass back and I just took it around the net and put it in.”

(Re game recap): “I think this one is a little more satisfying just after our let down in San Jose. You know, to let them come back in a game that we thought maybe we started really good and didn’t finish that way. So tonight to be able to do that to someone else gives it a little more satisfaction.”

PITTSBURGH GOALIE MARC-ANDRE FLEURY:
(Re game recap): “It was a tight game from start to finish, but it was nice to finally get those two points at the end. I think that power play gave them some momentum with coming a little more to the net and having more shots. But once again, I think our D did a good job out in front helping me out a lot and getting the puck out of the zone”
