Monarchs Beat Bruins 2-1
Monarchs goaltender stops a season-high 21 shots in the third period
Manchester (5-7-0-0) is tied with the Worcester Sharks (4-1-0-2) for third place in the Atlantic Division with 10 points each. The Bruins (5-6-1-0) are in second place in the Division with 11 points.
“It was a wild third period,” said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. “Providence came at us hard, exerting lots of pressure and throwing pucks at the net. Martin Jones was stellar for us making several big stops while Providence swarmed our net. Early on, we played very strong, we controlled the play. Mullen clanked one off the post on a power play that would’ve stretched our lead. We had several other chances too which were near misses. It was an exciting game. Hopefully we can continue to build on the good things we saw.”
Monarchs defenseman Patrick Mullen pushed the lead to 2-0 at 13:17 of the first period. Center Robbie Czarnik controlled the puck along the left wing boards and found left wing Dwight King on the doorstep of Bruins goaltender Anton Khudobin. King attempted to get a shot off at point blank range to the left of Khudobin but the puck deflected off bodies and back to the right point. Mullen gathered the loose puck and fired a blistering slap shot into the back of the net for his first tally of the season.
The Monarchs opened the scoring at 11:19 of the first period after right wing Brandon Kozun swatted the bouncing puck out of mid-air to beat Khudobin. Monarchs center Andrei Loktionov set up left wing Jordan Nolan for a shot from the left face-off circle. Khudobin made the save on Nolan’s but creating could not control the rebound. Kozun was on the left doorstep to bat in the look puck for his third goal of the season.
The Bruins cut the lead to 2-1 at 10:37 of the second period when center Maxim Sauve tossed a wrap shot off of Jones’ left pad for his second tally of the season. Bruins right wing Jamie Tardiff released a wrist shot from the left slot with the rebound going behind the net. Bruins center Josh Hennessy picked up the puck and handed it over to Sauve who was also picking up the loose change behind the Monarchs cage. Sauve flipped the puck off of Jones to put the Bruins lone goal on the scoreboard.
Jones (4-5-0-0) earned his fourth victory of the season stopping 39-of-40 shots. Khudobin (4-6-0-0) took his sixth loss of the season making 32 saves on 34 shots.
Manchester was 0-for-2 on the power play. Providence was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
