PORTLAND, ME – Left wing Ryan Duncan picked up his first goal of exhibition play to lift the Portland Pirates over the Manchester Monarchs, 2-0, at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Sunday afternoon.

“I thought our compete-level was good,” said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris.  “I saw good energy and thought we laid it all out on the line; just had a couple miscues that cost us the game.  We had just as many scoring chances and could have won this game.”

Duncan’s goal was a top-shelf wrister that beat Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones high on his glove side at 13:36 of the second period.  Pirates left wing Igor Gongalsky and center Colin Long assisted on the goal that made the score 1-0 and proved to be the eventual game-winner.

Pirates forward Ashton Rome added an insurance tally, his second goal of the pre-season, at 15:28 of the third period on a one-timer between the hash marks.  The goal was set up nicely by Gongalsky from the right wing boards.  Gongalsky picked up assists on both goals this afternoon.

The Monarchs penalty kill was 3-for-3 including a 1:37 kill of a 5-on-3 opportunity for the Pirates midway through the first period.  The Monarchs power play finished the game 0-for-4.

The game saw four fights in total.  Monarchs right wing Justin Johnson fought Gongalsky at 7:14 of the first period.  Johnson scored the take down in a short fight.  The second period saw Monarchs left wing Richard Clune and defenseman Jordan Hill battle against Pirates defenseman Dean Arsene and Rome, respectively, at 19:27.  Clune scored the take down, while Hill registered an even draw in his fisticuffs.  Monarchs left wing Andy Andreoff also dropped the gloves with Gongalsky at 8:02 of the third period. It was a no decision contest that ended with the linesmen breaking up the scuffle.

Notables:  Today was the Monarchs only game of the 2011 exhibition season…The Monarchs are expected to have center Justin Azevedo, defenseman Andrew Campbell, defenseman Thomas Hickey and right wing Jordan Nolan join the team on Monday October 3 or Tuesday October 4.
