Viatcheslav Voynov scored the game winner over Hartford on Wednesday.
MANCHESTER, NH – Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov ricocheted the puck off a defender and into the net to edge the Manchester Monarchs past the Hartford Wolf Pack, 2-1, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night.

Manchester (10-3-1-1) continues to lead the Atlantic Division with 22 points. Hartford (8-7-0-0) is in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 16 points.

“It’s interesting to watch (Hartford) and their strengths,” said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. “You can learn a lot from them and the way they play defense. Any game against Hartford will be a task and to bounce back in the third is real gratifying.”

Voynov scored his forth goal of the year only 3:21 into the last frame to put the Monarchs up 2-1. The puck bounced off the boards after a shot from center Justin Azevedo which ricocheted off the right wing boards heading toward the blueline. Voynov caught the puck along the right boards and took a shot. The puck bounced off a Hartford defender’s stick in front of the crease and redirected straight into the open net on the right side of goaltender Chad Johnson. Center Juraj Mikus also picked up an assist on the goal.

After the Monarchs were called on an early tripping call, putting the second ranked Hartford power play on the man advantage, right winger P.A. Parenteau put his team-leading 10th goal on the board at 1:49 of the second period. Center Corey Locke controlled the puck along the right wing boards and sent it across the ice in the direction of center Evgeny Grachev who was stationed in front of Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier. Grachev got his stick on the puck and slowed it down as it slid to Parenteau at the far post. The winger buried the puck into the back of the net to put Hartford up 1-0.

Monarchs defenseman Andrew Campbell blistered a shot by the Hartford goaltender on a one-timer for his first goal of the year at the 54-second mark of the third period. The hometown Monarchs came out on fresh ice in the third period on a power play, as the Wolf Pack picked up an interference call late in the second period. Rookie center Andrei Loktionov handled the puck along the right wing boards. Streaking down the left wing behind the Hartford defenders was Campbell who saw a swift pass from Loktionov and took a one-timer at Johnson. The puck snuck through on the short-side by the lunging goaltender. This equalized the score at 1-1. Center Oscar Moller also collected an assist on the goal.

Bernier (7-3-1) got back on track at home stopping 26-of-27 shots. Johnson (6-4-0) saved 22-of-24 shots.

Manchester went 1-for-7 on the power play. Hartford went 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

Notables: Center Gabe Gauthier moved up one spot in Monarchs history to ninth as he passed center Yanick Lehoux for the most games played with 214…Defenseman Andrew Campbell picked up his first goal of the year and only his second point of the season (1-1=2)…The Monarchs are now 7-1 at home with the only loss coming last Saturday versus Hershey…Goaltender Jonathan Bernier is currently tied with netminder Mathieu Chouinard for third on the Monarchs all-time list with a 2.25 goals-against-average.
