Training Camp Update Sept. 24
Raitis Ivanans did not skate on Thursday, taking a therapy day.

With the news Wednesday that Sean O’Donnell was suspended for the first two games of the regular season, LAKings.com speculated on who would take his spot for the start of the regular season.

That picture got more clear on Thursday.

The Kings sent two to Manchester, including defenseman Andrew Campbell while confirming that Joe Piskula was placed on waivers for the purpose of assigning him to Manchester as well.

That leaves the Kings with nine defenseman on their roster, including O’Donnell and hybrid forward Peter Harrold, so basically it is either Thomas Hickey or Alec Martinez that will make their NHL debut on Oct. 3 vs. the Phoenix Coyotes.

Head coach Terry Murray indicated at practice today that Martinez will play at Frozen Fury and that his lineup there will be reflective of what is on the ice for game one of the season.

Jonathan Quick is also slated to play the entire game on Saturday vs. Colorado.  Here is the roster for the Kings vs. Avalanche.

Here is how the team skated at practice today:
Smyth-Kopitar-Williams
Purcell-Stoll-Brown
Frolov-Handzus-Simmonds
Clune-Lewis-Westgarth
Richardson-Schenn-Harrold

O'Donnell-Doughty
Drewiske-Greene
Scuderi-Johnson
Hickey-Martinez

Quick
Ersberg-Bernier

OD ON SUSPENSION
As mentioned above, O’Donnell was suspended for five total games, the last three of the pre-season and the first two of the regular season as the result of a match penalty in a pre-season game against the New York Islanders. At 16:37 of the second period, O'Donnell was assessed a match penalty for delivering a cross check to Matt Martin of the Islanders.

"I probably should have given him a little slash on the ankles and then fought him, but I didn't. I reacted," O'Donnell said. "There's a part of me that feels kind of paternal toward Drew. Maybe I overreacted a little bit, but I went over there and I wanted to initiate a fight. I gave him a cross-check, and in my mind I gave him a cross-check right by the shoulder, in the upper chest. I skated quite a ways. I skated probably 15, 20 feet. When I did hit him with the cross-check, my momentum carried him over and that's what knocked him over and he crumpled down to the ice. You can see where I hit him, and where he ended up was about 10 feet away. So it was more like, I hit him and we kind of slid."

IVANANS OUT
One player that did not skate was incumbent enforcer Raitis Ivanans. Murray indicated that it was a "therapy" day for Ivanans, who is nursing an injury that has lingered for a couple days.

Ivanans got into two scraps with Brent Westgarth of the Islanders on Tuesday night.

Ivanans has 34 PIMs and has added an assist in five pre-season games this season.

TRANSACTIONS
The Kings on Thursday assigned Campbell and forward Marc-Andre Cliché to Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League and sent Kyle Clifford to his junior team in Barrie of the OHL.

The Kings have 28 players remaining on their 2009 Training Camp roster.
