Six Questions with Former LA Kings Defenseman Ian Turnbull

LAKings.com's "Alumni Six Questions" series continues with former Kings defenseman Ian Turnbull.

Ian Turnbull played 42 games with the Kings during the 1981-82 season.

Turnbull played ten years in the NHL, spending eight full seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs and partial seasons with both Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. Turnbull holds the distinction of being the only defenseman in NHL history to score five goals in a single game. He accomplished this feat on Feb. 2, 1977 vs. the Detroit Red Wings, while a member of the Maple Leafs. Although Turnbull played just 42 games with the Kings (all during the 1981-82 season), he has been an active member of the Kings alumni association along with fellow LA Kings alumnus Jim Fox.

LAKings.com: What is your favorite moment from your time on the Kings?

Turnbull: Easy, the time I came back to the bench after scoring my fourth goal in the game (Dec. 12, 1981 - Kings Records) and bragging to Mark Hardy about “the record.”

LAKings.com: What was the best perk of playing hockey in Los Angeles?

Turnbull: I think that there is no doubt that the best things were the beach and the weather.

LAKings.com: If you could give one piece of advice to the current Kings team, what would it be?

Turnbull: Keep buying into the structure that has been put in place and continue to believe in each other.

LAKings.com: If you could go back and change something about your career, what would it be?

Turnbull: I probably stayed in Toronto too long.

LAKings.com: If you could play on a line with a member of the Kings, past or present roster, who would it be and why?

Turnbull: In terms of playing out there with five guys, it would be Wayne Gretzky. I had a chance to go to Edmonton when he was there and I was in Toronto, but I declined.

LAKings.com: What is one sentence that describes your time on the Kings?

Turnbull: I enjoyed all my time with the Kings, even though it was just for a cup of coffee.

Turnbull will be at LA Kings Hockey Fest ’09, a new three-day interactive festival celebrating the Kings and the game of hockey from August 28-30. LA Kings Hockey Fest ’09 will feature Kings’ players, coaches, alumni (list of alumni attending), hockey dignitaries, special Kings’ merchandise, hockey memorabilia, special Q&A sessions with players and autograph sessions.  All activities and events during the LA Kings Hockey Fest ’09 will take place at LA Live in the heart of downtown Los Angeles.
