LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings and the local sports community lost a special friend on May 31, 1998, when Kings media relations assistant Michael Jund passed away due to a heart condition at the age of 22. In Michael's honor, the Jund family, the Kings and the Kings Care Foundation are pleased to announce that Monica Armstrong (KCBS/KCAL-TV) is the recipient of the eighth annual MICHAEL JUND SPORTS MEDIA SCHOLARSHIP AWARD.
Designed to reward hard-working college students who shared Michael's dream of working in the communications side of the sports industry, Monica will be honored tonight during the Kings-Chicago game at STAPLES Center. She will receive a $2,500 scholarship toward her education during the first television timeout of the second period.
Armstrong, 25, attends Cal Poly Pomona and is a Communications/Business major.
A four-person panel selected the 2007 winner. The following area sports teams, universities and news outlets support the award by nominating one intern per year:
Los Angeles Kings...Anaheim Ducks...Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim...Los Angeles Dodgers Los Angeles Clippers...Los Angeles Lakers...Los Angeles Galaxy...Los Angeles Sparks USC...UCLA...Loyola Marymount University...FSN West...KCBS-TV/KCAL-TV... KNBC-TV...KTLA-TV...KABC-TV...KTTV-TV.
The award is based upon the qualities that made Michael an excellent worker - strong technical knowledge of sports, superior media/public relations writing and communication skills, dedication to the job and an ever-present positive attitude. For more information, please call the Kings communications department.
