MANCHESTER STOMPS PROVIDENCE 6-3
Manchester (31-14-2-4, 68 points) is in second place in the Atlantic Division. Providence (28-20-1-2, 59 points) is in fourth place in the Atlantic Division. The Monarchs have a record of 5-0-1-0 in their last six games and they snapped the Bruins three-game win streak.
Left wing Jeff Tambellini and center Greg Hogeboom skated into the Providence zone on a two-on-one breakaway. Tambellini took control of the play and skated the puck to the left face-off circle as Hogeboom drove to the net. Tambellini tossed the puck to the net but Bruins goaltender Brian Eklund poked the puck away before Hogeboom could get some wood on it. Out of nowhere, center Connor James came streaking to the front of the net and jammed in his 13th goal of the season. James extended his point streak to four games with his goal at 4:09 of the first period.
The Monarchs extended their lead to 2-0 with center Matt Ryan scoring his sixth goal of the season, shorthanded at 7:55 of the opening stanza. Ryan won the face-off deep in the Bruins zone back to defenseman Richard Petiot at the left point. After winning the face-off, Ryan headed straight to the net and tipped in Petiot's shot from the point for the Monarchs second goal of the night.
Left wing Petr Kanko scored his 11th goal of the season by deflecting in a shot from right wing Konstantin Pushkarev. Defenseman Marty Wilford sent a pass up ice to Pushkarev who skated down the right boards to the face-off circle and sent a hard shot to Kanko at the right of Eklund. The puck caromed off of Kanko's stick and up and over the left shoulder of Eklund at 17:30 of the first period.
The Bruins scored their first goal of the game 19 seconds after Kanko's goal. Center Tyler Redenbach collected the puck behind the Monarchs net and fed it up to right wing David Lundbohm at the right face-off circle. Lundbohm snuck the puck past the blocker of goaltender Barry Brust. Defenseman Michael Schutte assisted on Lundbohm's 11th goal of the season at 17:49 of the first period.
Center Ben Guite brought the Monarchs lead to just one goal as he scored his 16th goal of the season at 3:58 of the middle frame. Right wing Jason McDonald sent the puck to Guite deep in the left corner of the Monarchs zone. Guite picked up the pass and carried it out to the left face-off dot and fired a shot past Brust to bring the score to 3-2. Defenseman Mark Stuart also assisted on the goal.
Manchester answered back with Ryan's second goal of the night and forward Brendan Bernakevitch's eighth of the season to bring the score to 5-2 after two periods. Ryan scored his seventh of the season by chipping a rebound past Eklund at 8:38 of the second period. Defenseman Denis Grebeshkov fired a shot at the net and Pushkarev picked up the rebound and tried to shove it under Eklund. The loose puck came out to the left side and Ryan was there to shoot it into the empty net.
Eklund was his relieved of his duties after letting in four goals in 28 minutes and 38 seconds of playing time. He was replaced by number 57 Jordan Sigalet.
Bernakevitch scored his second goal in as many nights at 9:47 of the second frame. Right wing Brad Smyth passed the puck from behind the net up to Bernakevitch at the hash marks of the left face-off circle. Bernakevitch sent a one-timer past Sigalet on the glove side. Left wing Noah Clarke assisted on the Monarchs fifth goal of the season.
Center Pascal Pelletier scored an unassisted power play goal at 5:34 of the final period. With Tambellini in the penalty box for hooking, Pelletier stole the puck at the right face-off circle and launched a quick shot past Brust to bring the score to 5-3.
Tambellini finished off the Bruins with his 22nd goal of the season at 15:33 of the third period. Defenseman Joey Mormina passed the puck up to Tambellini who went racing down the right wing. Once he reached the right face-off circle, he slowed down and sent a wrist shot up and over the glove of Sigalet and into the right corner of the net. Tambellini's goal left Sigalet stunned as he watched the puck go sailing over his shoulder.
Brust (14-5-1) earned his 14th win of the season stopping 32 shots. Eklund (5-12-1) took his 12th loss of the season stopping eight shots. Sigalet allowed two goals on 13 shots in 31 minutes and 19 seconds of playing time.
Manchester went 0-for-3 on the power play. Providence was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
