Q&A with Jack Johnson
Kings fans can look forward to Johnson making plays like this for the Kings for at least the next two years.
The Los Angeles Kings have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with restricted free agent defenseman Jack Johnson, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced Friday.

Johnson, 22, matched a career-high with 11 points (6-5=11), recorded 46 penalty minutes and tied for first among Kings’ defensemen with six goals and three power-play goals even though he only appeared in 41 regular season games this past season. The defenseman sustained a shoulder injury and was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 13, 2008. He was activated from injured reserve after missing 41 games on Jan. 17, 2009.

LAKings.com chatted with Johnson on the phone for a quick Q and A.

LAKings.com: What have you been up to this summmer - a summer that began with a trip to the World Championships with Team USA?

Jack Johnson: I went over to Switzerland and had a fun time there with the guys. We didn't do as well as we would have liked to, but it was still a fun time. I came back and headed home. I have spent a lot of time with family and friends I haven't seen in awhile. I am staying in shape and getting ready for another year.

LAKings.com: What exactly is your summer work-out routine?

Jack Johnson: I go hard Monday through Friday in the weight room. I have been running and lifting (weights). On the weekends, I usually end up skating, playing tennis or playing volleyball with my friends.

LAKings.com: Are you a better tennis player or volleyball player?

Jack Johnson: I am a lot better at tennis.

LAKings.com: Last summer you continued your education by taking classes at Michigan. Are you doing that again this summer?

Jack Johnson: Yes. My ultimate goal is to get my degree. I would like to get it done as quickly as possible. I am almost positive I am going to try and enroll at USC in the fall and take some on-line courses to help speed it up. Right now the teachers are real good at being flexible.

LAKings.com: The Kings traded for Ryan Smyth and signed Rob Scuderi a few weeks ago. Can you talk about those additions?

Jack Johnson: I don't know much about Rob outside of watching him in the Stanley Cup Finals. That is a great accomplishment and I am happy for him and I am happy he is now apart of our team. Ryan is a guy I watched a lot coming up. I have also now played against him a lot as well. I am happy to play with him and not against him because he is a phenominal hockey player.

LAKings.com: You recently re-signed with the Kings for two years. Can you talk about getting that done?

Jack Johnson: I am happy to be getting ready to play hockey in the fall. It took awhile to get done, but for personal reasons I felt more comfortable with the two-year contract. I am glad to have it done and out of the way. I am able to focus on hockey and getting ready for the fall.

LAKings.com: And finally, reflect on your season last year - a year that included shoulder surgery - and what are your goals going forward in 2009-10?

Jack Johnson: It was the first time I was really injured during my hockey career and I hope something like that doesn't happen again. I hope it is behind me. My main goal is just to help us win hockey games and to get into the playoffs. I think there is a good buzz going around as it relates to us making the playoffs. I think it should be like that every year. I look forward to being in that type of environment.
