The River Rats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from center Ivan Khomutov and right wing Aleksander Suglobov. At 4:02, left wing Ilkka Pikkarainen dug the puck out of the far corner and slid it over to Khomutov who was positioned in the left face-off circle. Khomutov sent a slap shot in on Monarchs goaltender Adam Hauser for his second of the season.
Suglobov made it a 2-0 Albany lead when he threw a wrist shot past Hauser on the power play at 11:17 of the first period. Defensemen Bryan Miller and Krisjanis Redlihs assisted on Suglobov's ninth of the season.
After a scoreless second period, the Monarchs turned things around for their comeback. Left wing Noah Clarke redirected right wing Ryan Murphy's pass beyond goaltender Frank Doyle at 4:01 of the third period. The Monarchs cycled the puck nicely starting at center-ice with a pass from right wing Lauri Tukonen to Clarke, who fed it over to Murphy as he skated down the left side. Murphy flipped the puck over to Clarke who sent it into the net for his fourth of the season.
With 31-seconds remaining in the game and an extra attacker on the ice for the Monarchs, right wing Petr Kanko sent his rocket of a wrist shot top-shelf on Doyle for his fifth of the season and to tie the game at 2-2. Defensemen Denis Grebeshkov and Mark Ardelan assisted on the goal to send the game into the Monarchs 14th overtime game and ninth shootout of the season.
Hauser settled into his zone and denied four out the five River Rats' shooters. Right wing Aaron Voros is the only player from Albany to score in the shootout. Clarke and center Yanick Lehoux were able to slip the puck past Doyle for the Monarchs' sixth shootout victory.
Hauser (9-2-2) earned his ninth win of the season stopping 35 shots by the River Rats. Doyle (4-7-2) took the shootout loss stopping 29 shots.
