Life as a head coach comes with a mandate to address the media on a regular basis during the season. How they address the media in those press conferences, well, that’s up to them.
For Kings’ coach Darryl Sutter, he conversed with the media during the 2014 postseason while stirring up a few laughs, frustrating a few reporters, and most importantly, deflecting attention away from the players in his locker room
Following the Kings’ Game 4 victory against the San Jose Sharks at STAPLES Center on April 24, Sutter’s post-game presser went viral when he gave San Jose’s arena – SAP Center, a brand new nickname.
When asked about his thoughts on the series shifting back to San Jose’s SAP Center, Sutter simply replied: “We’re going into the Cage. Cages are a good thing.”
“The Cage” was all the rage.
The Kings would go on to win their next two games at SAP Center The Cage, ultimately eliminating the Sharks from postseason play in dramatic fashion.
You could say Sutter has a way with words
Sutter’s simple, short-worded, and at times snarky responses to the media have come to be somewhat of an obstacle for NHL reporters, but entertainment for the outside world.
