IN MY OWN WORDS – Justin Williams
Fans can relive the greatest season in Los Angeles Kings history with The Official Story of the 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings. The commemorative book contains key details and images from the run, a foreword by Luc Robitaille, an introduction from Bob Miller and an afterward from Dustin Brown, and also included is an exclusive DVD with Bob Miller and Jim Fox announcing the Cup-clinching Game 6.
Here now on LAKings.com, we again share a portion of this special book as right wing Justin Williams – who scored the final goal of the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes, winning his first Stanley Cup in seven games over the Edmonton Oilers -- in his own words talks about the experience of what it was like prior to Game 6 against the Devils:
Sometimes you know the magnitude of a game before it begins, and that was certainly the case with Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. Individually, everyone on the team knew how important that game would be, but I wanted to make sure we were ready and had no regrets, so I said a few words.
My message to the team was simple: Rather than rolling the dice in a Game 7, let’s go out and make this our time. Whether or not what I said resonated, I can’t say for sure, but sometimes it is just important that someone stands up and speaks. It didn’t have to be me. Everyone on our team has an equal say, and anyone can speak to the room at any time. That said, I think I was more comfortable speaking because I am one of the older guys and I had been part of a Stanley Cup Championship team in Carolina.
Now that I have won the Stanley Cup twice, I can tell you that it never gets old and that every time is special. I will always remember the looks on the faces of my Kings teammates as we skated with the Cup at STAPLES Center. And, while I can’t know exactly how the longtime fans felt because I wasn’t in Los Angeles when the franchise started playing in ’67, I knew that the anticipation for winning the first Stanley Cup in the team’s history was huge, and you could sense it in the air. You could feel it build as we progressed through the playoffs. After we beat Vancouver in the opening round, we took a look around and realized we were one of the best teams left. The hardest part was getting into the playoffs. After that, things came together and we got on a roll and accomplished something very special.
